- An account of Claas de Graaf and his wife Elizabeth's capture by local Indians and their subsequent escape is described in Susan J. Staffa's, Schenectady Genesis, How a Dutch Colonial Village Became an American City, c.1661-1800 (Purple Mountain Press, 2004):
"Claes Andriessen de Graaf settled west of Glen on Graven Hoek in the Schenectady Bouwlands. So some of the early people lived outside of the Schenectady village. He was of French Huguenot extraction.
A family tradition, found in the “Diary” of Harriet Bowers Mumford Paige (Book O, pages 37 - 39, Schenectady Historical Society.) says that this region was still the territory of roving bands of Indians:
“He was taken prisoner with his wife and little son [Jesse] by the Indians, and carried by them to their encampment up the river. After they had been captives for some time Mrs. de Graff began from time to time, as she had opportunity, to parch corn and pound it and lay it away by stealth in a bag. Her husband and child every day accompanied the Indians out in their canoes to hunt and fish, and she was left behind to cook. One night the Indians all came home drunk and lay about the floor almost insensible in the liquor - she told her husband that now would be the time for them to escape. He said that the Indians would pursue and catch them and kill them. She replied that they might as well die as be prisoners and so they set off in a canoe with the child and the pounded corn, and rowed down the river all night, as morning began to dawn, they drew the boat up in a hollow sheltered place and hid it and themselves . Not long after, they heard the Indians pursuing them over their heads and not finding them they, after a while, went back again. When night came they came out of their hiding place, drew out the canoe and rowed down the river again and so they made their escape boating by night and hiding away by day until at last they rowed into Schenectady."4
