b. after August 1583, d. 7 April 1663
- Francis Cooke was born after August 1583 at England his parentage and youth is unknown.5
- He married Hester Mahieu at Leiden, Holland, on 20 July 1603 (int. 4 Jul 1603).6,7,5
- Francis Cooke died on 7 April 1663 at Plymouth; "above the age of 80."5
- The first record of Francis Cooke appearing in Leiden, Holland is in 1603, when he was about 20, and is described as a woolcomber from England.
- On 8 Aug 1606 Francis Cooke and Hester left Leiden, Holland for Norwich, England. On 1 Jan 1608 they were admitted to communion to the Walloon Church in Leiden by letter of transfer from the Walloon Church in Norwich. Thier stay in Norwich must have been short, as their son John was baptised early in 1607 in Leiden.5
- Francis Cooke was a Mayflower Passenger in 1620.8
- The 1627 Division of Cattle at Plymouth lists Francis Cooke, wife Hester, sons John and Jacob, and daughters Jane Hester and Mary.5
- He was admitted freeman in 1633 at Plymouth (the first list of Freeman in Plymouth). He is listed in the Aug 1643 list of men 16 to 60 able to bear arms (which would seem to imply that his age at death is overstated).5
- On 10 June 1646 Francis Cooke deeded land to Jacob Cooke after Jacob married Damaris Hopkins (100 acres to be granted upon their marriage). Francis signed the deed and Hester Cooke signed with a mark.5
- William Bradford's 1651 account says, "Francis Cooke is still living, a very olde man, and hath seen his children's children have children: after his wife came over (with other of his children) he hath 3 still living by her, all married and have 5 children so their increase is 8. And his sone John which came over with him, is married and hath 4 children living."5
- His will was dated on 7 December 1659 exhibited 5 Jun 1663, names wife Hester and son John. The inventory is dated 1 May 1663.5
- An agreement made 8 Jun 1666 between John Cooke, Jacob Cooke, Hester Wright the wife of Richard Wright, and Mary Tomson the wife of John Tompson disposed of the land of Francis Cooke. The agreement mentions Hester Cooke is still living. On the same date John Cooke confirmed to Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell, in equal shares, sixty acres of upland, near Jones River Meadow formerly given them by Francis Cooke.
On 5 Jul 1670 a court record mentions that land called "old Cookes Holes," lying at Jones River was given by Francis Cooke to Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell and since his (Francis Cooke) decease confirmed unto Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell by John Cooke.
On 1 Aug 1672 Thomas Mithchell of Duxbury sold to Richard Wright of Plymouth his share in the above grant and states it was given to him by his grandfather Francis Cooke of Plymouth.5 - Josiah Cooke of Eastham was not a son of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower.9

(For further information on the membership of Francis Cooke and his wife, in the Walloon churches at Norwich and at Leiden, see Jeremy Dupertuis Bangs, "The Pilgrims and other English in Leiden Records: Some New Pilgrim Documents" [ NEHGR143:195-98].) In his accounting of the passengers on the Mayflower, Bradford includes "Francis Cooke and his son John; but his wife and other children came afterwards"; in the summary of these families as of 1651, Bradford tells us that "Francis Cooke is still living, a very old man, and hath seen his children's children have children. After his wife came over with other of his children; he hath three still living by her, all married and have five children, so their increase is eight. And his son John which came over with him is married, and hath four children living" [ Bradford 442, 446]. Francis Cooke signed the Mayflower Compact. On 24 December 1636 John Harmon contracted to become the apprentice of Francis Cooke for seven years [ PCR 1:46]. On 7 March 1636/7 Francis Cooke sued John Browne the elder and several others, and on 7 June 1637 Francis Cooke, having sued Mr. John Browne, was granted an execution against him [ PCR1:60, 7:5]. "Take notice of our practice at Leyden, viz. that one Samuel Terry was received from the French Church there, into communion with us; also the wife of Francis Cooke being a Walloone, holds communion with the Church at Plymouth, as she came from the French, to this day, by virtue of communion of churches" [Winslow's Hypocrisie Unmasked in MD 27:64]." Profile of Francis Cooke. BIBLIOGRAPHIC NOTE: In 1901 George E. Bowman prepared a genealogy of the family of Francis Cooke, in which he abstracted every record he could find for the immigrant, his wife and children [ MD3:95-105]. Lora A.W. Underhill, in her pursuit of the ancestry of Edward Small, published in 1934 an even more detailed study of the family [ Small Gen 601-45]. Mary Walton Ferris also compiled a brief account of the family of Francis Cooke [ Dawes-Gates 2:238-44].

- [S454] Conklin Mann, "Two Famous Descendants of John Cooke and Sarah Warren", New York Genealogical & Biographical Record 73:159-161 (1942): "John Cooke has interesting facets. He was typically American. His father, Francis Cooke went for conscience sake from England to Holland about 1603. There he married Hester Mahieu, a Walloon. john Cooke, half English, half French, probably never saw England except when the Pilgrims touched there on their way from Holland to America. History tells us that John Cooke had independence of both thought and action.
His father was a leading figure in Plymouth. He himself, married Sarah Warren daughter of Richard Warren, another Mayflower passenger. He was made deacon of the Plymouth church at a surprisingly early age. Religion and politics in Plymouth, as elsewhere in those days, went hand in hand. The church was both church and political machine. Yound Deacon Cooke promptly showed himself dissatisfied with the status quo, was as promptly called a "shallow man" and an Anabaptist and thrown out.
The church history written in 1680 states: "One of the church of Plymouth whoe was formerly a deacon thereof; fell into the error of Anabapistry and falling in with some of those that carried on that Seesmaticall devision; at length was called into question by the church; and continewing in his obstanacye and sequestration from the church communion at times of solleume worshipp was alsoe cast out of the church and so Remaineth until this day."
John Cooke remained in Plymouth for a few years after his trouble with the church, then removed to remote Dartmouth on the Rhode Island border. At that time and for many years after, Dartmouth was a politcal battleground for Plymouth men, Baptists and Quakers, with the three groups fairly evenly divided in strength. John Cooke became leader of the Baptist faction represented Dartmouth at the General Court for many sessions, remained an important figure in Plymouth Colony politics all his life.
Early in Dartmouth were many other families that were drawn to the town as a haven from the trials of more puritanical Plymouth. The numerical strength of the Quakers and Baptists was in itself a protection against the local Puritan families. Soon the children and grandchildren of John Cooke were tied by marriage and kinship to the Allens, Russells, Hathaways, Smiths, Tabers, Willcoxes, Delanos, Churches. These families were living side by side, witnessing each others wills and deeds, intermarrying.

Matys Cornelissen1
b. before 1644
- Matys Cornelissen was born before 1644 if it is assumed he was an adult when he arrived in New Amsterdam. Born in Hoorn, North Holland, according to Our Van Horn Kindred, but without the offer of any proof other than the fact that descendants choose the surname "Van Horne." His marriage record would imply that he was born in Jutland, Denmark. Research done by Paul H. Van Horn, relayed in a manuscript on file with the New Jersey Historical Society, states that his efforts to locate the origins of Matthys have come up empty.2,3,4
- He married Fytie Adamse Brouwer, daughter of Adam Brouwer and Magdalena Jacobs Verdon, on 20 February 1692; He is called Matys Cornelissen van Jutland, Denmark, on his marriage record.3,5
- Also known as Matthys Van Horne.2
- He came to New Netherlands in about 1664.6
- In 1658 a Mathias Cornelius immigrated to Maryland with his wife Margaret and daughter Alicia (Md. Patents, Q:63). Mathias Cornelison, Swedish, late of New Amstel, was granted denization by Maryland Council on 29 July 1661 (Archives of Md., 3:429-430). Matthias Cornelius sells to Peter Mounson, 50 acres in 1665 (Baltimore County Deeds, IS#IK:20). Maryland Chancery Court Proceedings, 16 Jan 1676/77: Jury of inquiry held by virtue of writ dated 13 May 1676 presented by Capt. Jonathan Sibrie and Mr. Wm. Pearce of Cecil County, to inquire what lands Matthias Cornelius late of this county died seized of. Inquisition finds that he died seized of 50 acres on north side of Sassafrax adjoining Marquis Saverton, it being a plantation that he bought of Clement Nickolson, but we cannot understand if the land was ever planted. The value we judge but little,it being decayed ruinante plantation. He died about eleven years ago, without any heir. Verdict read in open court on 27 April 1677.
It is clear from the above, that the Mathias Cornelison of Maryland and Matthys Cornelissen of Kings County, Long Island, cannot be one and the same.4 - Matys Cornelissen took the Oath of Allegiance in September 1687 at Kings Co., New York, as "Matthys Cornelisen, 23 jeare" (in this country for 23 years).6
- His name was on the assessment roll of New Utrecht in 1693.2
- He appeared on the census of 1698 at Brooklyn, Kings Co., New York, as Matthys Cornelisse, with a household of 1 man, 1 woman, and 5 children.7
- On 20 Apr 1709, Nicholas Brower of Brookland, "am holden and firmly bound unto Mattyse Corneliusse of Brookland, in the penal sum of 350 pounds." The conditions of the obligation required Nicholas to pay "unto Cornelius and Abram the two and only sons and children of Mattys Corneliusse and Feytie his wife," the sum of 175 pounds each, within twelve months of the decease of Matthys Corneliusse and Feytie his wife, and in the meantime to pay yearly, and every year to Matthys and Fytie, his wife, and the longest liver of them after, the rate of six percent, payable on 1 May, yearly (a payment schedule is then described). Signed by Nicholas Brower. Then on 12 Aug 1709, Mattyse Corneliusse bound himself to Nicholas Brower, for the same sum of 350 pounds.8
- He was living in April 1709; as per the above mentioned indenture. Otherwise, no date or place of death, nor of the settlement of Matthys' estate, has ever been found.
- The inventory of the estate of John Bowne of Mattawan, Middletown Twp., Monmouth County, New Jersey, taken in 1716, includes a list of mortgagors. Among the mortgagors are "Mathias Corneliuson and Cornelius Van Horn" (N.J. Wills 1:50-54. The will is dated 14 Sep 1714).4,9
- In a deed, Abraham Van Horn sells to Capt. Richard Saltar, land that was originally acquired by Abraham's father Matthys Cornelisson.10
- Descendants of Matys Cornelissen have used the surname Van Horne, also spelled Van Horn or Van Hoorn. In 1959, Elsie O. Hallenbeck published Our Van Horne Kindred, a revision of Our Kindred which had been published in 1888 by her grandfather, Abram Van Horne. Hallenbeck's work has been used here as a guide for the descendants of Matys Cornelissen, but as it is a secondary source, which did not include source references or citations, it is to be used as a guide to be augmented by the uncovering of primary documentation.
