Bogardus Collection. The ancestry shown for Jacob's father, Isaac Brouwer is incorrect as stated in the collection's record (it follows a long disproved line back to Anneke Jans). The information regarding Jacob's descendants, however, appears to be possibly correct, and shows that Jacob was married twice, first to Agnes Brower and second to Sarah Ellsworth (herself a widow although this is not stated in the collection's record).
Further proof of the relationships shown here is desired.

  • He married Abigail Manning circa 1790.4
  • Jacob Brouwer is said to have died on 28 December 1816 at Broad Street, New York City, New York.4
  • Also known as Jacob Brower.5
  • Jacob is listed as the fifth son in his father's will dated 17 Sep 1777, to receive a choice of the two hundred acres of land above Schenectady, and eighty pounds New York Curency when he comes to the age of twenty-one.6

A chart and survey of the Hayadarosses patent and partly divided by Jeremiah, Jacob, william and David Brower, was made by Seth Baldwin, Surveyor. (I have not identified the location of the Hayadarosses patent).7
  • He appeared on the census in 1790 at Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York, with a family of 1 male over 16 and 1 female. Enumerated next to Joshua Manning and Charles Manning, and on the same sheet, Thomas Manning, John Manning, John Manning, Jr., and John Odell.8
  • On 15 April 1793, Joshua Manning, John Manning and Charles Manning, using the inheritance of Helenah (Brower) Manning as security drafted a promissory note bound to Nicholas Brower, Sarah Brower and Henry Bogert (the executors of the will of Nicholas Brouwer). A second draft added Jacob Brower and promised his inheritance as security.9
  • On 2 Apr 1795 "John Manning and Martha his wife of Clinton Precinct in Dutchess County and state of New York, sold to James Vanmatter for £250, land in Clinton Precinct beginning at the north corner of Charles Manning lot" containing 70 acres. The deed was signed in the pressence of Jacob Manning, Jacob Brower, Joshua Manning and John Williams." Recorded 9 Apr 1795.10
  • He is possibly the Jacob Brower who in a deed dated 17 April 1795, bought land of Richard Oliver and Catherine Oliver, his wife. Land in Hurley, Ulster County, New York, "distinguished on a map by William Cockburn, Charles Cantine and James Oliver by lot no. 19 containing 210 1/2 acres." Chenango Point, settled in 1802, became the village of Binghamton (Broome Co.) in 1834.14
  • Jacob Brouwer is probably the son of Nicholas Brouwer and his second wife, Sarah Drake. At present the evidence is circumstatial, but birthdates and locations from accounts of descendants match those of documented events. In 1790 a Jacob Brouwer in enumerated on the U.S. census in Clinton, Dutchess Co., New York with a family of 1-1-1, which would describe the family of Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning at that time. On the same census sheet are recorded, Jacob Brouwer's (son of Nicholas) step-father, Stephen Callow, as well as Charles Manning, John Manning, John Manning Jr., Thomas Manning, and Joshua Manning, i.e. a group of related Mannings that Abigail Manning may certainly belong to. Additional evidence is needed, but this connection appears to be probable.
  • Much of the information regarding the descendants of Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning was supplied by Lilly Martin, a direct descendant of Jacob Brouwer and Abigail Manning.4

  • Jacob Brouwer was born say 1701 at Queens Co., Long Island, New York.
  • He married Marike before 1730.1,2
  • Possibly the third son. Jacob is placed in the family for naming children Derck and Annatje, and as he is found at Raritan and then Readington, New Jersey during the same time as brothers, Elias and Pieter.
  • The property of a Jacob Brewer in Bridgewater Twp., Somerset County, New Jersey is mentioned in a patent dated 4 April 1749. "...boundaries to wit. Beginning at the Bound Brook where it Emties into Raritan, thence up the said Bound Brook to the King's Road at Lawrence Ruth's Mill, thence westerly along the top of said Mountain to the Gap by Jacob Brewer, thence down the said Gap to Chamber's Brook by McDonald's Mill..."3
  • Jacob Brewer is not found among the list of Freeholders in Bridgewater Twp., Somerset County, New Jersey in 1753.4
  • John Brewer is a possible son of Jacob Brouwer. Based upon what is currently known, Jacob is a possible father of John Brewer. It is noted that John did name a son, Jacob; a daughter, Mary; and a son, Richard (the equivalent of Dirck). However, it must be emphasized: this possible father-son relationship has NOT been confirmed or proved.

Jacob Brouwer

b. July 1762, d. 1784
  • Jacob Brouwer was possibly born in July 1762 (this date is unconfirmed).1
  • He married Agnes Allen at Reformed Dutch Church, New York City, New York, on 12 March 1782 "Zyn van ons in den Huwelyken Staat bevestigd, Jacob Brouwer en Agness Allen, beide van Nieuwyork."2
  • Jacob Brouwer died in 1784 at possibly New Brunswick, Canada.1
  • Jacob Brouwer is a possible son of Adolf Brouwer. Jacob's widow, Agnes, does appear in New Brunswick after the Revolution, but there is little record of Jacob. It is possible that Jacob may have been named for Jacob Verdon, who would be his paternal grandmother's father. At this time there is not enough evidence to confirm a father - son relationship between these two.

  • Broadalbin was part of the Sacandaga Patent of 1741. It was a part of the former town of Caughnawaga in northern Montgomery County. It was first settle about 1770. The town of Broadalbin was created from the towns of Johnstown and Mayfield in 1793, before Fulton County was formed. It is at the south end of the Great Sacandaga Lake which was created in 1930, and is actually a reservoir which was greated by the daming of the Sacandaga River. Mayfield was also a part of the Mayfield Patent of 1770. It was also a part of the original town of Caughnawaga. Mayfield was established as a town in 1793.
  • Although additional evidence would be welcome, it is almost certain that the Jacob Brouwer, baptized in 1785, son of Jacob Brouwer and Margitta Triet, is the same Jacob who appears in Fulton County, New York in the 1800s as an adult.

  • Jan Brouwer is one of three 17th century Brouwer family progenitors found in New Netherland/New York. He emigrated to New Amsterdam in 1657. He was a blacksmith and lived at Flatlands, Long Island, New York. Sons Johannes and Hendrick appeared to have settled at Hempstead in Queens County, while son Pieter remained at Flatlands. Son, Derek, was among the Dutch inhabitants at Flushing, Queens Co., in 1698. Third generation descendants are also found in Monmouth, Somerset and Hunterdon Counties, New Jersey, apparently moving there with the migration of Kings County residents to the Raritan Valley area of New Jersey beginning in the first decade of the 1700's. In the past, the close proximity of Jan's family with that of Adam Brouwer's has caused many to confuse and interconnect the two. DNA testing of descendants conducted through the Brewer DNA Project http://www.familytreedna.com/public/BrewerDNA/ and reported in "DNA: Adam Brouwer Berckhoven, Elias Brouwer, and John Brewer" (NYGBR 138 [Oct.2007]:245-49) has demonstrated that any possible common ancestor between the two would have lived tens of thousands of years ago.
