Bogardus Collection, Anneke Jans and Everardus Bogardus Descendants Association, Wilmington, Ohio. Privately printed. This work contains errors, among them the false account of Anneke Jans descent from William of Orange. This account had been proved a fantasy long before 1988, and its inclusion in the reprint edition is unfortunate. The account of Pieter Adamsz Brouwer is also in error, and there may be other errors with the earlier Brouwer generations. Latter generations are recounted by descendants who lived in the latter part of the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, and the ancestors who they describe were their parents and grandparents. In addition to the original work of Bertha C. Spencer, the "re-publisher" Sharon Brewer Dodge, includes her own Brewer lineage with the unproved claim that her ancestor, Willis Brewer of North Carolina, was a son of Jacob Brouwer (b.1709) and a grandson of Sijbrandt Brouwer & Sarah Webber of New York City. There is also a short note from William B. Bogardus who questions this connection. No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. Appendix p.C. No additional information is provided. Further research is required .. Hereinafter cited as Three Hundred Years in America.

Jacob Brewer1,2

b. circa 1801, d. before June 1880
  • Jacob Brewer was born circa 1801 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont.3
  • He married Jerusha Westover at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, on 3 November 1823.4,5
  • Jacob Brewer probably died before June 1880 as he has not been found in searches of the 1880 U.S. census.
  • Surname is also spelled Bruer; (1850 U.S. census).6
  • Probably a son of Peter Brewer of Highgate, Vermont, or possibly a son of Peter's brother, Jacob. He is most likely a grandson (and not a son) of Jeremiah Brewer who shows up on the Highgate Town records in 1794 and 1803, and is on the 1800 census in Highgate. Jacob Brewer appears on the1825 (for the first time) and 1826 Grand Lists for Highgate, Vermont along with Peter Brewer, Silvester Brewer(1826 only), and John G. Brewer. Jacob also appears in the town records in 1834, he is named as a juror in 1842.7,8
  • On 12 Mar 1827, Peter Brewer of Highagte sold land in Highgate to Jacob Brewer, also of Highgate, 100 acres with the stipulation that should Jacob die without heirs, the ownership of the land was to be returned to the family of Peter Brewer, "excepting a support for Jacob's widow during her widowhood."9
  • He appeared on the census in 1830 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, with a family of 1 male under 5y; 1 male 5-10y; 1 male 20-30y; 1 female 20-30y. Total of 4 family members.10

Cutler of Highgate sold for $200 received from Jacob Brewer of Highgate, "a certain parcel of land lying and being in Highgate bounded as follows west by John Stinats, south by land owned by Alfred Keith and Albert G. Cutler and east by Marvins Gore Line and to run far enough north on Marvins Gore Line and John Stinats line to contain just forty acres." Signed by Joseph Cutler, witnessed by H.D. Brewer and Lucy Cutler. This was the same parcel of property, purchased by Joseph Cutler from Jacob Brewer's uncle, John G. Brewer, just three days prior.11
  • On 31 Mar 1839, Jacob Brewer was on Capt, Drury's Militia Roll at Highgate, Vermont.12
  • 1840 Federal Census shows Jacob living in Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermot. His family consists of 2 males under 5 years; 1 male 5-10; 1 male 15-20; 1 male 40-50; 1 female 5-10; 1 female 30-40. Jacob would be born at the latest, about 1800. The family is recorded immediately after the family of Peter Brewer.13
  • , On 25 May 1843, Peter Brewer of Highgate sold land to Schuyler Brewer of Highgate, 130 acres bounded by Stimit's east line, Jacob Brewer's north line, the west line of the old Marvin Gore line, and by the province line to the north. The deed was witnessed by Jacob Brewer and G.G. Brewer, Jacob Brewer titled, Justice of the Peace.14
  • , On 7 Mar 1844, Rensselaer Brewer of Swanton sold to Schuyler Brewer of Highgate, for $500, the same two parcels of land he had bought of Peter Brewer on 3 Apr 1843 (and which Peter had bought of Abel Drury). The deed is witnessed by Richard Moor and Jacob Brewer, with Jacob Brewer as Justice of the Peace, swearing to the identity of Renssealer Brewer.15
  • On 18 Oct 1847, Rensselaer Brewer of Swanton, Franklin Co., Vermont for $500 received of Jacob Brewer of Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont… a parcel of land lying and being 55 acres of land situate and being in Highgate aforesaid bounded northerly by Canada line, easterly by Peter E. Brewer, Abel Sawyer and William Teachout, southerly by Schuyler Brewer and westerly by Schuyler Brewer.16
  • He appeared on the census on 23 August 1850 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, spelled "Jacob Bruer" age 49, born in Vermont, a farmer with real estate valued at $2222. His wife Jerusha is age 45, and the children are Norman, 19; Laura, 16; Jackson, 11; Jacob R., 8; and Leland, 2.6
  • Jacob Brewer moved to at Milford, Jefferson Co., Wisconsin, in 1854.
  • He appeared on the census in 1860 at Milford, Jefferson Co., Wisconsin, Jacob Brewer, age 59, b. in Vermont. The family includes his wife Jersuha (age 53 born in Canada) and children recorded with initials: J.J.(age 20, b. VT), J.B.(18,VT), S.W.(9, VT). Jacob is a farmer, his personal estate valued at $404.17
  • Jacob Brewer moved to at Riverton, Floyd Co., Iowa, in 1868.
  • He appeared on the census in 1870 at Riverton, Floyd Co., Iowa, Jacob is 69 years old, born in Vermont, a farmer. His wife is Jershua, age 64, born in Canada. There are two children Jacob B., 28, born in Vermont, a farmer, and Seth W., age 20, born in Vermont, a farm laborer living as single adults in the household. Also in the household is the family of Jacob's son, Jackson M.18
  • Although believed to be the same person by some, Jacob Brewer, the husband of Jerusha Westover, and Jacob Brewer, husband of Elizabeth Stickney, are two distinct individuals, seperated by about twenty years at birth. All U.S. census records regarding Jacob and Jerusha Brewer clearly show that he was born in about 1801, and was just a year or so old when the other Jacob Brewer (b. 1782) married Elizabeth Stickney in Highgate, Vermont.
  • The parents of Jacob Brewer have not been confirmed by either a birth or death record. If a birth record does exist for Jacob it has not been found, and death records in Floyd Co., Iowa were not kept until the year 1880, while it is probable that Jacob died during the decade of the 1870s. Jacob is placed in the family of Peter and Hannah (Sanborn) Brewer because of his close proximity to Peter on U.S. census records in Highgate, and because of land transactions recorded in the Highgate Town Records involving Jacob with Peter Brewer, and Jacob with Rensselaer Brewer. The possibility is open however, that Jacob is a son of Peter's brother, Jacob Brewer and his wife, Elizabeth Stickney.
  • A descendant of Jacob Brewer and Jerusha Westover has participated in the Brewer DNA Project, Kit no. 65385. The results are consistant with and confirm a descent from Adam Brouwer (ca.1620-1692).19

Family: Jerusha Westover b. bt 1803 - 1804, d. b Jun 1880

Jacob Brewer1,2

b. 20 May 1782
  • Jacob Brewer was born on 20 May 1782 at near Brunswick Center, Rensselaer Co. (then Albany Co.), New York.3
  • He was baptized on 2 June 1782 at Gilead Evangelical Lutheran Church, Center Brunswick, New York; the sponsors were parents Jeremias and Hanna Brewer.3
  • He married Elizabeth Stickney, daughter of Joseph Stickney and Mehitable Sawyer, at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, on 22 May 1802 by Matthew Sax, J.P. (rec. 23 May 1802, Highgate TR).4,5,6
  • Also known as Jacob Brower.5
  • Jacob Brewer is named in the Highgate, Vermont Town Records in 1803. On 28 Jun 1804, Jacob Brewer, in Highgate, Vermont, was involved in a land transaction with James Wilson, "Know all men by here present that I Jacob Brewer of Alburgh town in the county of Franklin and state of Vermont, do for and in consideration of ten dollars done in hand said before this meeting here of James Wilson of Highgate in this county and state ...given grant bargin of sale and for ever quit unto him the said James Wilson and by there presents do warrant to defend from all demands of possician (sic) the said James Wilson. This and assign forever the following ___ of land lying and being in Alburgh town so called. Boardered as follows (vis) the north by Wm Jefferson(?), on the east by Peter Brewer and on the south by Reuben Willard. Containing 25 acres of land. To have and to hold this above granted promises with all the privalidges (sic) of after ___ there unto belonging to him this said James Wilson his hiers and___." Signed by Jacob Brewer, witnessed by Matthew Sax, dated 28 Jun 1804.7
  • , By a deed dated 10 March 1803 (recorded 18 May 1803) Abel Baker of Highgate sold for fifty dollars to William Hefflon of Highgate, a tract or parcel of land lying in Alburgh bounded by the lot Elisha Higgins now lives on, by John Wilson on the east, and by Jacob Brewer on the south.8
  • On 28 Jun 1804, Jacob Brower of Alburgh, Franklin Co., Vermont, for $10, sold to James Wilson of Highgate, Vermont, "a piece of land lying and being in Alburgh bounded as follows (vis) on the west by said Wilson on the north by Wm. Hefflin on the east by Peter Brewer and on the south by Reuben Willard containing 25 acres of land," signed as "Jacob Bruer."9
  • Jacob Brewer appears on the Grand List of Highgate, Vermont in 1805 (with an estate valued at 26.50), 1806 (at 60.00), 1807 (at 60.00).10
  • On 6 Apr 1809, Jacob Brewer witnessed a deed of Hercules Lent to Levi Stowe.11
  • On 7 Apr 1809, Jacob Brewer of Highgate leased from Herman Allen of Colchester, Vermont 100 acres on Lot #26 (eight tenths of all mines and minerals, white oak & pine timber and all running water wherever mills may be constructed always excepted) for the rent of twelve cents and five mills payable on the first day of January 1810. Jacob to pay all taxes. The lease was signed by both parties on 5 May 1809. Herman Allen was, evidently, a large absentee land owner. The Highgate Town Records of this period contain numerous lease agreements between Herman Allen and many of the residents.12
  • On 1 May 1809 (at Swanton), Jacob Brewer and Robert Kent, both of Highgate, Vermont, sold to Andrew Bostwick the whole of Lot #3 in the first division of lands in Highgate, for the consideration of 120 dollars current money, "the aforesaid meaning the lot of land leased by Herman Allen to Richard Tinar."13
  • Jacob Brewer appeared on the census in 1810 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont, appears as Jacob Brower (Ancestry.com has transcribed the name as Brown) with a family of 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 16-25. (With two children aged 10-15, it is more likely the parents were aged 26-44).14
  • Jacob Brewer and his wife, Elizabeth apparently disapear from the records in Vermont before 1820. As the U.S. census records prior to 1850 offer limited information, trying to identify the couple with some degree of certainty in the U.S. has come up empty. It is also very possible that they moved north to Canada.

Family: Elizabeth Stickney b. b 1784, d. b 1867

No factual or supporting evidence that would tie Willis Brewer of North Carolina (late 1700s) to any of the Brouwer families of New Netherland has been found. p.19.
