After his first marriage he rented a farm in St. Albans, Vermont, where he stayed for five years. In April 1844 he came to Enosburgh and purchased his wife's father's farm of nearly 250 acres. Commonly called "Judge Brewer", he was a prominent farmer in Franklin County. He was elected three times a representative from Enosburgh. He also held town offices, being frequently elected selectman, and for two years was associate judge of the Franklin County Courts. He was a communicant of the Episcopal Church, and was also described as a "staunch Republican". As of 1891, his five children were all deceased execpt one, a son who resided, with his wife and three children, on a farm in Fremont Co., Iowa.
  Age 37 in 1850, living in Enosburgh, Vermont, a farmer, real estate valued at $2500. The family consists of his wife Mary, son Hobart (age 6) and a second family headed by Minich Rennory(?) who has a wife and child and is employed as a laborer. Age 47 in 1860, living in Enosburgh, Vermont, a farmer, real estate valed at $12,000. Family is wife Mary P., son G. Hobart, and three employed individuals. Age 57 in 1870, living in Enosburgh, Vermont, a farmer, with his wife Mary P., and daughter Annie, age 9. There are also two farm laborers and a domestic helper, and Sarah Preley, probably a sister of Caleb's wife Mary.
