Found article in the Tunkhannock Republican, May 7, 1886, page 3: "I deem it unnecessary to offer any apology for this communication, as it is written in behalf of a young lady (an orphan) who desires to find her only brother, from who she was seperated in early childhood, and she takes this as the most feasable method of finding him. Believe me, any favors extended in this matter will be fully appreciated by the lonely orphan and her many friends.
The history, so far as we have been able to find it, is briefly, this: Dannie and Maggie Whalen were left orphans by the death of their mother about 15 years ago (1871) at the age of 6 and 4 years respectively. They were placed by their father (John Whalen) in the Southern Tier Orphans Home, Elmira, New York, which was the last knowledge had of him. Maggie was adopted by Jonathan Brewer of Meshoppen, with whom she stayed until about three years ago (1883). Dannie, of whom she has a faint remembrance, was taken from Elmira to an orphan asylum in Buffalo, from which he was adopted by a Mr. Healy of Portage, Wyoming Co., New York, who died about a year ago (1885), since which time he has been doing for himself and appears to have been at Burns, Allegheny Co., New York. Anyone having information which might lead to the consumption of the desire of this article will please communicate them with, Thomas Caswell or Maggie Whalen, Cherokee, Iowa.
