The following is taken from VERMONT LAND GRANTEES 1749-1803 by Jay Mack Holbrook
The table at the bottom of the page were the only BROOKS' I found. It never hurts to double check - also, I did not make note of the source codes (BAT895, DEW922, etc.) so you'll need to find Holbrooks' book for further information. LG in the table stands for Land Grant. In parenthesis I placed what I determined the county would be so double check that for sure.
This publication assembles the names of 14,794 persons who received land grants in early Vermont. The first grants, called the New Hampshire Land Grants, distributed 58% of present-day Vermont to New Hampshire settlers. The second round of granting, called the Vermont Charters, allotted the remaining 42% of the state to other land speculative New Englanders.
The New Hampshire Land Grants were issued from 1749-1764. They consisted of 135 tracts of land granted to 8,603 persons. Some of these grantees settled the land, while others sold their grants and never lived in Vermont.
Subsequently, New York, who never recognized the legality of the New Hampshire Land Grants, patented much of Vermont from 1765-1776. The land was assigned in large tracts to 107 absentee landlords, who leased small parcels to tenants. In some instances, these hired tenants of New York land owners settled in Vermont on lands previously granted by New Hampshire. The ensuing conflict between the New Hampshire people and the Yorkers is the central theme of Vermont settlement.
In 1777 Vermont became a republic. Shortly thereafter, mainly from 1779-1782, Vermont began issuing charters for land not allocated previously under the New Hampshire Land Grants. Some 105 charters were offered to 6,191 people. An alphabetical arrangement of the grantees is found in VERMONT'S FIRST SETTLERS by Jay M. Holbrook.
