| Buried: Lebanon Cemetery off of RT 71 north side of road running to Quaker, Vermillion Co., IN | Biographical and Historical Record of Vermillion County,
1888, pg 119 "The Lebanon Cemetery lay alongside the Lebanon Methodist
Church which stood about 40 rods west of Route 71 on the north side of the
blacktop road running to Quaker, the area being commonly known as Edgewood.
The land on which the church stood was part of the Wabash Ordnance Plant
land, but not included within the fenced area, and the church was dismantled
along with many other buildings in the vicinity. The land was entered by Jesse Hollingsworth and passed into the hands of the Carmack family who deeded the land for the church in 1848. The cemetery is quite small and the names seen on the stones are Castle, Holaday, Keen, McFall, Myers, Nickle, Ricker and Dr. Hiram Shepard and wife Susan. The cemetery is abandoned and is hardly visible from the road, all that can be seen being a clump of briars." |

| The date on the stone for Ruth is 1863 so this is NOT the infant daughter of Hiram and Susan Shepard. |

"Prominent Physician Dies in Vermillion Township - Dr. Hiram Shepard, who
resided on his farm, about 8 miles southwest of here, died on last Friday night
from paralysis. He had the first stroke about 5 years ago, and 2 or 3 since
then. His funeral occurred on last Sunday afternoon and was very largely
attended. Services were held at his late residence by Rev. S.R. Sargent of the
Baptist Church of Chrisman, IL, after which his remains were interred in the
Lebanon Church Cemetery. The Odd Fellows, of which order he was a member, had
charge of the remains and buried him according to the rites of that order.
The deceased was born in Newport, this county, January 1, 1836, and died at
his home, near Dana, at 10:30 o'clock Friday night, December 16, 1898. Dr.
Shepard was married July 9, 1889 to Mrs. Susie Traphagen, who survives him. To
them were born 4 children, 2 of whom are dead, James and Ruth. The 2 living are
Carl and Grace.
Dr. Shepard graduated at Miami Medical College of
Cincinnati, OH, in the spring of 1869. He first located and practiced his
profession in Bloomfield, IL, after which he attended a term of lectures at the
Indiana Medical College. He then associated himself with Dr. Cuthbert F. Keyes
for a number of years. In the early seventies he located in the then prosperous
little town of Dana, where he built up an extensive and lucrative practice, to
which he gave his undivided attention until his health became impaired, about 5
years ago, when he was compelled to abandon his professional work.
He was
a charter member of Dana Lodge No. 581, U.O.O.F., which was instituted in
February 1881. Early in the history of his local or subordinate lodge, he
attained to the Past Grand's degree. Later he was elected Representative, and
still later he was appointed by the Grand Master of Indiana, Deputy Grand
Master. The principles and tenets of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows were
the governing principles of his life. He helped institute Vermillion Lodge No.
594, of this place, in July 1882.
The deceased was a good citizen,
honorable in all his dealings, and highly esteemed by all his acquaintances, who
sadly lament his death. He left a wife and 2 little children an estate estimated
to be worth not less than $25,000." - Newport Hoosier State, Wednesday, December
21, 1898
