Richard Fairbanks arrived in Boston in 1633, probably with his wife,
Elizabeth. He probably sailed with Cotton on the Griffin.
The Colonial Post office for the collection of mail was established by order of
the General Court of Massachusetts on November 5, 1639 in Boston at the home of
Richard Fairbanks for "all letters which are brought from beyond the seas, or
are to be sent thither." He was allowed a penny for the transmission of each
letter and was accountable to the authorities in charge of the colony.
