From a family history compiled by David E. Bartlow of Beaverton, OR, http://www.burklowfamily.com/bartlow/IndexVanB.html   "After his father James' [Barkelow] death, in Hampshire Co., VA, Johnson Barkelow, et. al. (his brothers, sisters and mother, all named) sold the gristmill, sawmill and two acres to Joseph Briggs, 19 Feb. 1798 (recorded 17 Sep. 1798). There were no recorded witnesses.

"That transaction gave Johnson Barkelow enough money to begin speculative purchases in the Military Lands of the NW Territory near Portsmouth, OH after the admittance of Ohio to the Union in 1803. Most of his dealings were with Stephen Colvin in 1804 - 1806."  The last known transaction by Johnson Barkelow was registered in Scioto Co., 24 September 1806,  In the land transaction, Johnson was listed as "of Hampshire Co., VA while Stephen Colvin was "of Greenup Co., KY."  Shortly after that Johnson died.
