We have been able to research OUR "Clegg ancestors" back to Samuel Campbell Clegg. He is the first Clegg to which we are able to make a definite connection. Most Clegg researchers believe Samuel Campbell Clegg's father was Samuel Clegg, a son of Holloway Clegg, son of Peter Clegg who was the son of John Clegg, who brought his family from Wakefield, England to Northhampton County, Virginia.

Samuel Campbell Clegg was born cira 1740, he married Barbara Flick cir. 1765, she was born cir 1745 in Germany, daughter of Johannes Flick and Sabrina, she died cira; 1854 South Carolina.

Samuel Campbell Clegg was hung in 1779 at Star Fort in "Old" Ninety Six, South Carolina. along with four other men. Aquill Hall, Charles Draper, James Lindley and John Anderson. He was hung for being a Loyalist (Tory), Eighty others who were also tried were eventually released.

There is much written about the Loyalist in the Southern Campaign of the Revolutionary War. The first battle of the Revolution South of New England took place at Ninety Six, November 19-21, 1775, between 562 patroit's and a group of 1,900 loyalists (Tory's). During that battle, South Carolina experienced the first loss of life for the cause of freedom.
