Paul knew Lucy Sherman from grade school days through graduation form college in 1938. They were married in April, 1941. Paul was a member of the St. Joseph, Michigan Municipal Band from 1940 to the 1980's, except for the war years.
Paul writes of himself:
"I had an innate liking for music, started clarinet lessons at an early age, ending up majoring in clarinet performance, plus music education. I played in the college orchestra while still in high school. I received my real challange while a member of All-State band, in Iowa City. Picked up on saxophone, and was playing in dance bands while still in high school. After graduation, I taught instrumental music (grades 7 through 12) two years in Iowa, and almost two years in Benton Harbor, Michigan, until 'joining the Navy' in February, 1942. In 1946 music became an avocation - to be much more enjoyable if not required also to teach some seven hours each day in the classroom. So my 'off hours' (after doing administrative work in a large horticultural printing plant - which incidentally was really most enjoyable - and a real learning experience), were more of a treat. I still can rattle off many of the botanical names (mostly Latin!) of trees, shrubs, vines, evergreens, ground covers, perennials, annuals, and whatever else I have left out. Remaining hours became devoted to private music lessons, directing a church choir, playing in both Symphony Orchestra and Municipal bands (both area-wide in scope), singing in male chorus and mixed choruses, constant dance band engagements, playing 'pit' jobs for both traveling and local extravaganzas, and member of Board of Directors for the local Symphony Orchestra."
