FAMILY of Ambrose Davis BRIDGES, (sometimes called "Buck"), and Charlotte RUSSELL
Douglass, 1912, History of Southeast Missouri
AMBROSE DAVIS BRIDGES ... A native of Kentucky, he was born, January 10,
1823 in Mercer county, a son of William and Nancy (Davis) Bridges,
Click the former of whom died in Campbell, Missouri, in June, 1846, and the
latter died about 1838 annd is buried at Belmont Crossing.
Reared and educated in Kentucky, Ambrose D. Bridges came to Missouri soon after attaining his majority and on January 18, 1844, located in
the woods near the St. Francois River near what is now Campbell, where
he pursued his favorite occupations, farming and hunting.
During the Civil War, he served as Lieutenant in Captain Leander Taylor's Company, Col. James Walker's Regiment, for a year, and after his return home, while running his saw mill he had frequent encounters with the guerrillas, which then infested the country at times.
He is identified with one of the leading financial institutions of his community, having been a director of the Bank of Campbell since its organization.
Mr. Bridges married, February 24, 1845, Charlotte Russell, who was born
January 13, 1829, in Hickman County, Kentucky, and died at the home near
Campbell, Missouri in 1896. Fourteen children were born into the pleasant home of Mr. and Mrs. Bridges, namely: Elizabeth, deceased, who married Jasper Beasley; Minerva, a widow, living in Campbell; William, of Campbell, of whom a brief notice appears elsewhere in this work; John; James; Ellen and Perry E., all deceased; Eliza, wife of Lee J. Taylor, of whom a short sketch may be found on another page of this volume; Sarah Ann, wife of Frank Bristol,***; Lucy, wife of G. W. McCutchen; Josephine, wife of Thomas Medley; Lottie and Daniel, twins, who died in infancy, and Marion D., deceased.
Politically Mr. Bridges is a stanch adherent of the Democratic party.
***My grandfather, Frank A. Bristol, 1st, was of a conservative Puritan background and did not care to pay subscription money for a piece about himself in Douglass' book. Consequently, Douglass said he was 'an employee in a mill', when in fact he was the Owner-Operator of his own saw-mill at Canalou from about 1910 until about 1925 when a large flood wiped out his entire complex of land, mills and cut wood. He made wheel spokes for the automobile industry. This line of Bristols has been in some form of the business of lumbering for 10 continuous generations (1718-the present). Before this he had owned the Cotton Belt Hotel from 1905 until 1908, then sold it and joined a colony of Campbellites who went to Artesia, New Mexico. The Douglass crew was in Campbell in 1911 collecting material for his book:
"Campbell Citizen":
11/24/1905, "Frank A. Bristol purchased and took control of the Cotton
Belt hotel Monday. Mr. Gattis retired from the hotel business on account
of ill health of Mrs. Gattis."
and
"Cotton Belt Hotel F. A. Bristol, Proprietor, 1910
Campbell, MO Rates $2.00 per day Free Sample Rooms"
NOTE: While he no longer owned the hotel in 1910, the owner was still using ads with his name on them in 1910.
F.A. Bristol was the 2nd telegraph operator in Campbell, MO

OTHERS:
The Douglass History names another son as Perry E., dcsd. Douglass has
13 children listed. With the addition of Perry E., the total of children
for Ambrose and Charlotte becomes 16. The missing child in the Douglass
list is Mary Jane who must have died young. Also, I had heard long ago
that A. D. and Charlotte had had 17 children, which, if so, leaves one
name missing. Furthermore, another descendant says that they had six
daughters and four sons who lived to maturity, but I count seven
daughters and four sons who did so: Elizabeth, Minerva, Margaret, Dixie,
Sadie, Louisiana, and Josephine (Jo)(7), and William, John Henry, James
Jacob and Marion Davis (4).
NOTES:
I am not sure of the order of some of the names of the grandchildren,
i.e., who belongs to whom, in every case. If anyone else can add to or
correct any of this information, please get in touch. Please, only
descendants or competent genealogists or historians.
