INTRODUCTION

In 1998, a letter from a second cousin who I had never met, living in Spain, prompted my to start researching my Family History. From this passion has grown this obsession with, not only the origins of my family, but the origins of my surname. I have found many variations of spelling including:

BRET(T)EL(L) BRETTLE BRI(T)TEL(L) BRIT(T)EL BRAT(T)EL(L) BRATTLE

I have, included other similar sounding variations whenever I have encountered them - such as:

BRETHEL(L) BETHEL BRITNELL PRETTLE BRETEUILE BREETTEL

(NB: I found my BRETTELL family in the 1881 CENSUS of London listed as BRETHELL)

Other names directly associated with my BRETTELL Branch of the Family Tree include:

Tracing my line backwards, my Grandparents arrived in Australia in 1921 on board the THEMISTOCLES from London.

Prior to London, the trail has led me back to Black Country and, specifically, to Birmingham. BRETTELL was a well-known Black Country surname and there are a number of other BRETTELL researchers. I have had, and gratefully acknowledge, the assistance of these researchers here:
