Edmund Barter Milton was born in 1864 at Plymouth, Devon, son of
a shoe factory worker William John Barter Milton and his wife Sarah
Jane Prettejohns. In 1887 he married Florence Rebecca Robinson, daughter
of Derby police sergeant Edward Robinson, at Derby. The 1891
Census shows them living at 170 & 172 Normanton Rd, Litchurch,
Derby with their three year-old daughter Florence Margaret, and William
was a publican. Adamson (1997) shows William Milton to have
operated as a photographer from the Victoria Studio, at 26½ St.
Peter's Street, Derby, from 1898 to 1900. Kelly's trade directory
for 1899 does indeed show him at this address, but it seems likely that
Thomas Frost had already taken over the
studio by February 1900. Certainly, by April 1901 Milton appears to
have abandoned the photographic profession and was working as a railway
clerk in Peterborough.
