A carte de visite is known from photographer J.W. Thompson of Stanton Gate, which is a small hamlet on the Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire border, north-east of Stanton-by-Dale.

It is possible - although by no means certain - that this is the John William Thompson (born c. 1856 Derby St Peter's) who was living with his mother at 3 Station Road, Stanton-by-Dale, and working as a colliery clerk, in the 1881 census.  This particular individual married Mary Alice Paling at Basford, Nottingham later that year, and they moved to Derby St Werburgh's, where they had at least five children and John worked as a general clerk.  Thompson may have operated briefly as a photographer prior to his marriage and moving to Derby.
