Maxfield was born at Bolsover in 1871, son of a tailor Thomas Maxfield
(1832-1895) and his wife Mary née Brooks (1838-1900). In
the late 1870s, Thomas opened a grocer's shop, and subsequently
expanded the business to include first a news agency, and then a
provisions and tea dealership. By April 1891, John had moved to
nearby Chesterfield and was working as an assistant to a provision
The 1895 Kelly's trade directory makes no mention of John Henry Maxfield in either Chesterfield or Bolsover. By 1896, when the photo below was taken, he was clearly working in Bolsover, but this could not have lasted long, as the 1899 Kelly's directory entry for that town again shows no photographers. He married Sarah Ellen Harvey at Chesterfield in 1896, and in late 1900 a daughter Doris Millicent was born at Heeley, Yorkshire, where they were still living in April the following year. J.H. Maxfield had by this time changed his profession and was working as a telegraphic linesman.
