BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Thomas Sweet Doidge was born on 14 September 1833 at Newton Abbott, Devon, son of a Plymouth bookseller John Sweet Doidge (1793-1884) and his second wife Sarah. He was baptised a month later at the Wesleyan Chapel in West Teignmouth, and spent his childhood in Totnes and East Stonehouse. By his late teens he and his older brother John Sweet Doidge junior were working as assistants in the bookshop, while a younger brother Jabez was employed elsewhere as an attorney's general clerk. In early 1861 Thomas married a farmer's daughter Fanny Abbott Toms (1832-1870) at Torrington and they settled at 31 Whimple Street, Plymouth St Andrew. They had two daughters before Fanny died at Plymouth in 1870. Thomas remarried to a school mistress Caroline Crewes (1837-1886) at Plymouth five years later; they had a son and another daughter.

Thomas Sweet is shown in all of the censuses as a bookseller, rather than a photographer. However, Scott (1985) lists the firm of Thomas Doidge & Co. as operating the West of England Photographic Art Studio at 169-170 Union Street, Plymouth from 1877 until February 1890. The 1891 census lists his daughters Evelyn and Lily as booksellers, and presumably they continued to run the business after their father's death in mid-1888.

If you have any further information about Thomas S. Doidge and his studio, or if you have any photographs by him, please email me.
