BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES

Leonard Norman was born in 1864 at Litchurch, son of an engine smith William Gilford Norman and his wife Elizabeth née Leonard, who had moved to Derby in the early 1860s from Leicester. His older brothers worked in the printing trade and in 1871, at the age of 16, he described himself as an apprentice, but it is not clear what trade to which he was affiliated.

He disappears from view in the 1891 Census but then reappears in 1899, having taken over the top floor of the building at 36 Victoria Street, Derby from photographers Layton and Lamb. He advertised in Kelly's trade directory for that year, and Adamson (1997) shows him operating there as a photographer in 1900, but by April 1901 he had moved on. The census shows him boarding in Ipswich, Suffolk, and employed as a photographer. Details of his movements after this date are unclear, although in 1912 he is listed as a photographer at 63 Abbey Street, Nuneaton, Warwickshire.
