of Edensor & Eastbourne

Go straight to Portfolio

Eugene Frederick Bampton was born in 1846 at Marylebone, London, son of a tailor John Bampton and his wife Sabra Ballington (1814-1899), who were originally from Edensor, near Bakewell in Derbyshire.  Eugene returned to stay with cousins in Edensor in 1861, and was baptised there on 28 April that year.  From at least April 1871 until the late 1870s, Eugene Bampton was earning a living in the Edensor district by photographing local homes.  By April 1881, however, he was living at the home of an unmarried aunt in Eastbourne, Sussex, and described himself as an "artist in photography".  Ten years later, in 1891 he was working in Brixton, Lambeth as a mercantile agent, and in 1901 described himself as an "agent for advertisements".
