Repton & Gresley Hundred, South Derbyshire

Parish Register Transcripts

Church Gresley, St Mary & St George's
Baptisms prior to c. 1840 have been extracted from Bishops Transcripts by the LDS church, and can therefore be accessed via the IGI. I have started my baptisms transcriptions from 1841, and have so far managed to complete the 1100 odd entries up to 1860. I have spent more time on marriages, resulting in a complete transcription of almost a century. This extends from 1783, when the marriages were first entered in a separate register, until 1881. Many thanks to Anna Arrol for assistance with this part of the project. I'm in the process of transcribing burials, and have completed the period from 1695, when the general register commenced, until 1812.

Stapenhill, St Peter's
The series of Stapenhill parish registers between 1770 and 1800 are conspicuously absent from the IGI, and have not even, as far as I am aware, been filmed by the LDS Church. The Bishop's Transcripts for this parish appear to be incomplete. This transcription of the baptisms between 1770 and 1800, which has been very kindly provided for inclusion on this web site by Val Kennedy, is therefore a very useful addition to the collection. I will take the responsibility for any errors that have crept into the index.
N.B. The parish of Stapenhill included the joint chapelry of Stanton & Newhall until 1833, after which date Newhall had its own registers (see below).

If anyone is able to assist by providing continuous i.e. not just selected or single surname, extracts from the Stapenhill general, baptism, marriage or burial registers from this or other periods, any additions would be gratefully received. The LDS controlled extraction programme for the IGI is very incomplete for Stapenhill, and any contributions would be valuable additions to the resource.

Newhall, St John's
"Stanton and Newhall form a joint township and chapelry ... The church ... was opened ... 9th July 1832 ..." (Bagshaw, 1846). Gill Castle has spent an enormous amount of time transcribing the Newhall parish registers, and has very kindly allowed me to put them onto this site. Once again, I must claim the responsibility of any errors that have been inadvertently created during the indexing process. You may realize that the bulk of the baptisms (until 1875) and marriages are already included in the IGI. However, Gill's transcriptions, which were taken from microfilms of the the original registers at Matlock, rather than Bishop's Transcripts, will be useful for those wishing to conduct more detailed research. In particular, the marriages provide a great deal more information than is available from the IGI.

I also have, by kind courtesy of Gill Castle, burials for the period 17 Aug 1872 to 23 Sep 1874. If anyone has those for the intervening period (1865-1872), either hard copy or in electronic format, or has access to a copy of the registers and has the opportunity to transcribe it, please get in touch with me.

Newton Solney, St Mary's
Although most of the Newton Solney parish registers have been extracted from Bishop's Transcripts by the LDS church and appear in the IGI, I have examined them in some detail, and will include my transcripts on this site for various reasons. The marriage entries, for example, provide a lot of additional information, which is often of great value to genealogical research. Burials, of course, will be of particular interest to those with Newton Solney ancestors, since they don't feature on the IGI at all.

Woodville, St Stephen's
None of the Woodville St Stephen's parish registers appear in the IGI. The parish was created in December 1846, out of portions of the parishes of Hartshorne and Ashby-de-la-Zouch, and straddles the Derbyshire-Leicestershire boundary. Microfilms were kindly made available for purchase by John Palmer, and are being transcribed & indexed by myself. Later years will be added as and when I have time.
