Don't have a genealogy software program? Enter your genealogy data in a web-based family tree or use one of these free programs.

IMPORTANT! If you choose to use genealogy software and to upload your family tree file (GEDCOM) to a web site other than RootsWeb's WorldConnect, make sure you remove data for living individuals before uploading your file.

GEDCOM is a standard computer file format that allows you to share your family tree with others.

1. Since a GEDCOM file is a computer file, you naturally need to have a computer first.
2. You need to have a genealogy software program installed on your computer. (see below!)
3. Enter your relatives' information into the program.
4. Finally, follow the instructions in the program's Help section to create a GEDCOM file.

Before sharing your GEDCOM file with others, make sure they also have a genealogy software program installed on their computers.

Once you've entered your ancestors' information into your genealogy software, including the sources for them (VERY IMPORTANT!), submit Your GEDCOM to one of these web sites.

Please submit your family tree in GEDCOM format to WorldConnect. Why WorldConnect? Because it is free to search through and can be viewed several ways. By submitting your information you are helping your cousins.

consider administering a mailing list, volunteering for projects, creating a MyFamily homepage, or even posting your own information on RootsWeb. Listed below are a few areas that you can help RootsWeb in. These areas are always looking for volunteers.

There are many lists and message boards that do not have administrators, both surname lists and locality specific lists. Consider adopting one.

RootsWeb hosts many volunteer projects who rely on volunteers. Consider giving them a hand.
