These Boen/Bowens were listed in the
Dawes Commission Index, 1896. This is an index to over 14,000 records of individuals in the Five Civilized Tribes that applied for citizenship under the Act of 1896. The Five Civilized Tribes include the Cherokee,
Choctaw, Chicasaw, Creek and the Seminole. Each record includes the individual's name tribe, and case number. This compilation, in effect an Indian census, was also used as the basis for the allotment of tribal lands to individual
Indians. It is my understanding that the 1896 Index was later thrown out as the majority of those listed were found to be non-Indians. The Dawes Final Roll was completed and was used to determine Indian citizenship.
However, many people chose not to apply for the final roll for one reason or another. Those who didn't apply gave up their citizenship forever and those who lived outside of the tribal land in Indian Territory also gave up
their rights as well. Also, following the 1896 Index is the Dawes Commission Index, 1898-1914. Do you have Boens with Indian heritage? If so, please send your data to be added to this site. DAWES COMMISSION INDEX, 1896
