Austrian locations via phone directory Church records - availability and accessibility The Diocesan Archive of Graz-Seckau in Graz allows access to all so-called duplicate parish records of Styria which were written by parishes in Austria since 1835 and sent to the Diocese at the end of every year. However, the duplicates are not only inferior because they are just duplicates (into which transcription errors may have crept in). But they also lack later marginal entries as were often made in the original registers (Matrikel), such as marriage and death places and dates, or changes of last name, recorded in the margins of the baptismal entries. The same archive also holds many of the original parish records (Matrikel), and the holdings slowly grow as parishes entrust their original Matrikel to the archive. In my estimate, about half of the parishes of present day Styria have their original Matrikel stored at the Diocesan Archive in Graz. The Graz archive also has a precious holding of parish records duplicates of some parishes now in northern Slovenia (former Lower Styria). The situation is roughly the same with the Diocesan Archive of Klagenfurt-Gurk, located in Klagenfurt. There, more than 50% of the parishes of Carinthia have their original matrikels at the archive (the rest still at the parishes), typically for the times of about 1890 and earlier. The archive has a full set of duplicates (starting with 1835) including the parishes now in Northern Slovenia. There are reports indicating that access to the archived duplicates may be difficult to gain. (.....) The Diocesan Archive for Burgenland in Eisenstadt houses the original Matrikel of about half the parishes of Burgenland. It has no duplicates, as these all stayed in Hungary at the dioceses of Gyõr and Szombathely. Fortunately, these duplicates have been filmed by LDS and are available for researchers via LDS's libraries. Very few if any parish records for Styria or Carinthia have been filmed by LDS. |
