Joseph came to Canada at the age of 8 on the Nova Scotian from Liverpool England. He came with two brothers and on sister. The ship's manifest showed that his family were destined for Amherst NS with his mother and her family and his step-father and his family. At some point he got employment at Dunlap and Cook where he learned how to sew and make hats and likely fur garments. After apprenticing there he made his way to Montreal, Quebec and started his own fur business. It appears that he quickly met and married his wife and settled down in the middle of Montreal's old residential and business core.
