Stephen B. Hargroves enlisted in the Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of Northern Virginia C.S. A. He and his brother Judson T. Hargroves both enterd as privates in the 3rd Regiment Company A Burke Guards. Judson was later appointed Sargent Major.

Stephen's older brother William Brinson Hargroves enlists at Savannah with Captain Banks. Cpl. Hargroves was in Co. B, 21st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry until, through consolidation of units, he was transferred to Co. E, 7th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry, where his brother Stephen also was
