Cornelia, who has a sever laudinum addiction due to chronic cancer pain is turned away by the pharmacist, who was told by her husband not to allow her to buy anymore. She returns home, shuts herself upstairs and shoots herself in the head with a pistol. Her daughter Pauline was in town visiting with her two daughters Elsie and Betty at the time. Sarah was living in her parent's home as well. Sarah had a date that evening with a gentleman caller, and the children were told not to mention their grandmother's death when the gentleman came around so that he wasn't scared off. Betty, who could never keep a secret, blurted out "grandmother shot herself" as soon as the fellow came in the door.
