Died without a will

*************************************************************************************

There were Langstons in colonial Virginia. And they were found in that part of North Carolina settled largely by Virginians.  In a 1784 Wayne County, North Carolina will.

Jacob Langston leaves his estate to his five children, one of whom was named

Absalom ( A prominent name in Maggie Langston Clements' family tree). The first

identifiable American ancestor of Maggie Langston was Absalom Langston of colonial South Carolina, who could very well have been related to the Wayne County, North Carolina, Langstons.

In any event, one Absalom Langston, in 1772, received a grant of several hundred acres of land lying on both sides of Dutchmans Creek some 25 miles southeast of Spartanburg, South Carolina, in what is now Union County. It is not known exactly how much land he acquired, what he paid for it, where he came from or when he died.  Records in the Union County courthouse indicate that he had four sons:  Caleb, Nathan, Daniel and Bennett.  In 1875 Daniel and Bennett bought from William Wofford, 100 acres "on a branch of Tyger River called Dutchmans Creek, probably land adjoining that of their father. In 1792, the sheriff of Ninety-Six District, as that part of South Carolina was then called, seized 450 acres of land on Dutchmans Creek to satisfy a judgment against Caleb Langston,  lawful heir of Absalom Langston, to the amount of 27 pounds, 8 shillings, sterling, together with interest and cost." Old Absalom had recently died and his oldest son, Caleb, must have been delinquent in paying the inheritance tax on the land left to him.  At public auction seven months later, brother Nathan Langston bought the 450 acre tract in question for 20 pounds and promptly settled the judgment against the property. In 1796, Bennett Langston sold to

Zachariah Belue, 60 acres on the north side of Fairforest Creek, which flows into the Tyger River a short distance below Dutchmans Creek. Two years later Daniel and Bennett Langston deeded to Thomas B. Hunt, "200 acres lying on both sides of Dutchmans Creek." In 1800, Caleb Langston died, leaving his property to his six children,  not of age , one of whom was named Absalom. At the subsequent sale of Caleb's goods, Daniel Langston bought two old Axes  for $1.621/2. In 1802, Nathan Langston sold to Thomas B. Hunt, for $377, land on both sides of Dutchmans Creek, "part of a  parcel tract laid out for Absalom Langston." At the same time, he sold to Reuben Sanders, 175 acres for $400, "in the fork of Tyger River and Dutchmans Creek, from part of a tract laid out for Absalom Langston." To this same Reuben Sanders, Daniel Langston and his wife, Martha, sold 100 acres on Dutchmans Creek in 1805; and in 1807, they bought 100 acres for $425, from William Edwards, Martha Langston's father, on Morris' Branch of Tinker Creek, which flows into the Tyger River just below Fairforest Creek.]

Notes for Samuel Langston:

A brother of one my ancestors settled in Jackson Co. Georgia. His name was

Samuel Langston. He made his will Oct. 3, 1825 and it was probated Oct. 31,

1825. He left everything to his daughters -- Alcy Wright, Betsy Rhea,

Rachael Williamson and Mary Blackstock.  His executors were "my friend and

brethren Edward Adams and Joseph Davis". Witnesses Jeremiah Reeves, John

Wallis, Geo. Adams.

I suspect but have no proof that he also had sons but didn't name them since

he had already given them their share.

There may have also been others in my family that settled in Jackson Co.

More will be said about Isaac Langston later. We continue with Daniel and Martha Edwards Langston.

There is evidence that  they were land speculators and money lenders as well as farmers. In 1813, they lent Isaac Hawkins $700. The note Hawkins signed stipulated that the obligation would be void if Hawkins deeded to the Langstons 300 acres on the wagon road from Union to Cook's Bridge on the Tyger River, and if Langston paid Hawkins $350. Three years later the nine heirs of Isaac Hawkins deeded to Daniel and Martha Langston 300 acres in separate tracts of 100 acres each, on "a water of Tinker Creek and Tyger River", for $350. When Daniel died he held four promissory notes signed by different borrowers for $72, $115, $153 and $110.

When Daniel died in 1822, he was probably in his mid-fifties. An inventory of his goods and chattels and the long drawn-out probating of his estate over the next 36 years reveal  considerable  about  these  ancestors  of  Maggie  Langston.  Named administrators, Martha, his wife, and Isaac, his oldest child, immediately approved expenditures of $103.22, for "coffin, saving peaches, pulling fodder, etc." The chattels consisted of 9 cows and calves, 30 hogs, 4 horses,10 sheep and 16 geese, valued at $257. Among other more valuable items were: 3 bedsteads, beds and furniture, $120; wagon, $25; tools, $18; hogs head of molasses, $65; 75 gallons of brandy, $27.75; 50 barrels of corn, $100; spinning machine, loom with gears and 2 spinning wheels and reel, $42.25; 17 hundredweight of cotton, $13; 7 hundredweight of fine flour, $28; 9 bushels of wheat, $13.50; 21 pounds of wool, $8; book collection, $5. Such other goods as tableware, kitchen utensils, leather, scythe and ladle, tables, chests, chairs,

barrels, shotgun, pewtor ware, cotton and wool clothing, coffee mill and grinder and bee stands brought the total value of all goods and chattels to $909. Nearly a century later a similar inventory of Mal Clements' holding would not have 'been strikingly different from Daniel Langstons'.

The Daniel Langston homestead at the time of his death was appraised at $216, which was considerably less than its true worth. Martha occupied the house and owned a third of the 108 acre tract. After son Isaac moved to Alabama in 1835, she became the administratix of the estate. In 1841, she bought out daughter Patsy and her husband, Thomas C. Clark, residents of Sumter County, Georgia, for $18. In 1847 she deeded her third interest and the part conveyed to her by the Clarks to son William Langston, for $90. In 1857 Martha bought the interest of daughter Rhoda Chandler, of Walton County, Georgia, for $18. On the death of Martha in 1858, William Langston petitioned the Union County sheriff to sell the 108 acre estate and divide the proceeds among the eligible heirs. The last and highest bidder, William, bought the piece for $400. In 1860 he sold it to J. B. Edwards, a relative on his mother's side, for $560.

Died on Tuesday, the 23rd ult., Mrs. Laodicea Springfield, aged

71 years, wife of Thomas Springfield. The deceased was the daughter of Solomon Langston of Revolutionary memory, whose family perhaps suffered more from the ruthless ravages of the Tories and Indians than almost any other, and the subject of this remark took an active part in the struggle and performed many daring deeds on behalf of her suffering country and friends. She was the

mother of *22 children * and has left about 140 grand and great grand

children. She was a kind and affectionate wife, mother, and neighbor, and has

left a large circle of acquaintances to deplore her loss.

SPRINGFIELD

A Rebel For The Cause Of Freedom

During the Revolutionary War

------------------------------------------------------------------------

LAODICEA LANGSTON

"DARING DICEY"

A courageous young girl of about 16 years, was a rebel for the cause of

Freedom during the Revolutionary War. In fact, her Patriotism to the

American cause was so great, it earned her the pseudonym "Daring Dicey".

She provided valuable information to the Whigs and harassed the enemy

during the entire war. This was Dicey Langston, the daughter of Solomon

Langston of Laurens District, South Carolina.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Langstons lived in area concentrated with loyalists, many of whom

were their relatives, so it was easy for Dicey to hear what the Whigs

were up to. She would then cross the Enoree River and report to the

Whigs. Eventually, the Tories became suspicious of her actions and

threatened Solomon, Sr., saying that they would hold him accountable for

Dicey's action. Solomon scolded her and for awhile she discontinued her

reports.

Bloody Bill Cunningham and his Scouts were a company of loyalists, so

called because of their "ruthless cruelty". When Dicey heard by accident

that the Bloody Scouts were about to visit the "Elder settlement"

(a.k.a. the Elder settlement, or Little Eden, Roster of South Carolina

Patriots in the American Revolution) 20 miles away where her brother

James and some friends were living, she was determined to warn them. She

left home in the middle of the night and walked many miles, crossing

streams and marshes on foot, as there were no bridges. She crossed the

Tyger, which was swollen from the recent rains. She finally made it to

her brother's house and warned him of the Bloody Scout's intentions to

destroy them. He and his friends rushed to warn everyone, and the next

day, when the 'scout' arrived, they found the area deserted, no one was

there for them to "wreak their vengeance."

This was posssibly the exploit that secured her place in history.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

An expert shot and rider, Dicey made the trip, by night, and the longer

she travelled, the darker it seemed to get. The road ahead was barely

discernible. And the creeks and swamps held unseen tangers. But her

greatest threat came while submerging in the dark, rain-swollen icy

waters of the Enoree river. It was difficult to cross in daylight.

Almost impossible in darkness. At times she had to fight the threatening

currents but subsequently she arrived at the encampment. The spirits of

the men were so low that she had boards torn from a roof to make a fire:

she then baked hoecakes for each soldier. Spirits lifted, the Bloody

Scouts' attack was thwarted. The whole community was saved. A dripping

wet Dicey returned home in time to cook breakfast for her father, never

telling him that she was gone all night long.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

For her information to the Patriots, Bloody Bill Cunningham and his

Scouts took revenge on Dicey's father, Solomon, with whom she lived in

Laurens County. They backed the now aging man to the wall and aimed to

shoot. Dicey lunged in front of a soldier's cocked weapon and informed

the assailants, "You will have to shoot me first!"

This courage was rewarded. Cold-blooded as they were, they could not

bring themselves to shoot. So the Tories left.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dicey's disregard of personal danger, where service could be rendered

was remarkable. One day, returning from a Whig neighborhood in

Spartanburg District, she was met by a company of Loyalists, who ordered

her to give them some intelligence they desired respecting those she had

just left. She refused; whereupon the captain of the band held a pistol

to her breast, and ordered her instantly to make the disclosures, or she

should "die in her tracks". Miss Langston only replied, with the cool

intrepidity of a veteran soldier: "Shoot me if you dare! I will not tell

you," at the same time opening a long handkerchief which covered her

neck and bosom, as if offering a place to receive the contents of the

weapon. Incensed by her defiance, the officer was about to fire, when

another threw up his hand, and saved the courageous girl's life.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another time, her brother James had left a rifle in her care, which she

was to keep hid till he sent for it. He did so, by a company of "Liberty

Men", who were to return by his father's dwelling. On arriving at the

house, the leader asked the young girl for the gun. She went

immediately, and brought it; but as she came towards the soldiers, the

thought struck her that she had neglected to ask for the countersign

agreed upon between her brother and herself. Advancing more cautiously,

she observed them that their looks were suspicious; that for aught she

knew they might be a set of Tories; and demanded the countersign. The

leader answered that it was "Too late. We have the gun now, and its

holder, too!"

"Do you think so?" Dicey turned the barrel to his head and said, "No you

don't. And you won't unless you give me the sign!" she cried, cocking

it, and presenting the muzzle at the leader. "If the gun is in your

possession, take charge of her!" Her look and attitude of defiance

showed her in earnest; the countersign was quickly given; and the men,

laughing heartily, pronounced her worthy of being the sister of James

Langston. As the men left, the leader lingered and looked back at Dicey

and smiled. She returned the smile. The leader, Thomas Springfield,

would become her husband after the war.

After the struggle with the mohter county ended, Dicey married Thomas

and moved into the Greenville District of South Carolina near Traveler's

Rest. Here she lived and died near Enoree Church and there one can see a

monument today honoring a girl that dared to risk her life because of

her love for liberty."
