Collingwood
Thomas Goodwin Bowles and family, originally of Quebec City, are listed in the 1861 Census of Collingwood twp. and probably lived here from about 1858 to 1862. They had a daughter, Sophia, here but who also died here at age 3 and a son George was born. In a few more years they would move on to the U.S. and then later on to Montreal. See The Bowles Family of Quebec City and The Bowles of Montreal for more information on this family. Thomas Bowles of Peel county was the Sheriff of nearby Durham county for 32 years. He died at his son-in-laws home in Orangeville but the death was registered in Collingwood and an extensive obituary was published in the August 14, 1913 issue of the Collingwood Bulletin. See The Bowles of Peel co. for more details on Thomas Bowles. Another (unrelated) family lived near Thornbury. The W. W. Smith Gazetteer for Grey County (1865) has a John Bolls living at Con. 11, Lot 33 of Collingwood twp in Grey county which would be just on the west edge of Thornbury, Ont. This family spelled its name as Boell in other records. John Boell of Thornbury's date of birth is given as May 11, 1841 on his gravestone and as July 1841, England in the 1911 Census. A family using the Boell spelling of the surname lived in Aston (now North Birmingham), Warwick county, England in the 1800's. This was the most frequent occurrence of the Boell spelling in England (per FreeBMD website) in that period although there are isolated occurrences in Hendon and Chelsea. They probably go back to an earlier spelling such as Boal or Bolle. The birth of a Jonathan Thomas Boell at Aston is listed in the June to August 1841 civil registers (1841 vol. XVI p. 367) but the record has not been examined to obtain his parents names. John Boell came to Canada in 1859 (per 1911 census) at age 18 and settled near Thornbury. He probably farmed on his first arrival but later his occupation is given as Brickmaker. John (probably Jonathan Thomas) Boell b. May 11, 1841 Birmingham, England m. Elizabeth Hynds (b.
