Two brothers, William and John Bowles, sons of John Bowles of Quebec City, settled in Brighton township.  See The Children of John Bowles of Quebec City and The John Bowles Family of Quebec City for more information on this family.

William learned his shoemaker trade under his father's guidance at his shop on St. John's Street in Quebec City.  Later he had his own shop in Quebec City, then in Bytown (now Ottawa, Ont.) for a few years and finally settled in Brighton, Ont. in 1851 where he opened a shoemaker shop at the corner of Young St. at Sanford St.

In the late 1850's they were joined by his brother, John Bowles Jr. who was also a shoemaker, and his family.  The 1871 Census lists William as a shoemaker and John as a merchant in Brighton.

(John's son William Cochrane hired as a messenger at the legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada in feb. 1855.  Find out where that was, may show where they lived.)

The descendants of both these families seem to have moved on to other places by the 1900's.
