The Bowles of Springhill

The Bowles of Canada and their Roots in Ireland and England

The John Bowles family of Ireland emigrated to Canada in April 1826. The information once they arrived in Canada has been confirmed but the following details regarding their origin in Ireland, including the names of his parents, his birthplace of Springhill, co. Tipperary and the names of his siblings, have not been independently confirmed by myself yet.

Also not confirmed: John moved from Springhill to The Commons in Kilcooly parish (in the Slieveardagh Hills near the border with co. Kilkenney) where he married Mary Pollard at Gortnahoe in 1814.

This information, once confirmed, would connect this Bowles branch to The Bowles of Peel co. (Ontario) whose ancestors also emigrated to Canada from this same small region one year later. See The Bowles of Peel's Origins in Ireland. The problem though is that the John Bowles family which settled in Quebec were Catholic while the Bowles of Peel county were Protestants. In fact, they were on a published list of signers of an Anti-Catholic Petition in 1827 which also included a John Bowles, Sr. Was there a rift in the family created when John married a Catholic woman which caused their departure from Ireland? John and his family leaving in 1826 and his cousin (?) Charles leaving the next year after the public reaction to the anti-Catholic petition created by the Tipperary Free Press?
