| James Bowles and family lived in the Silvermines area in the early 1800’s. He is described as “James Bowles of Kilboy” and his occupation is given as a shoemaker. Silvermines is in North Tipperary in the parish of Kilmore 4 miles south of Nenagh. Kilboy was the name of a mansion about 1 mile from the village of Silvermines. It was the seat (i.e. home but also the center of administration for the lands which he held) of Lord Dunally the owner of the mines at that time. James would not have been a resident of the mansion but was probably employed there. Kilboy is Gaelic for The Yellow Church which is the common explanation of the town name. It is more likely Kilboy means "church of the Ui Buide". The Ui Buide were a sept or clan which occupied this area about 450AD. See also: Extract from Topographical Dictionary of Ireland by Samuel Lewis, 1837 Emigration records show that in 1840 his son William migrated to Australia with 3 others from Silvermines in his party. They were Judith Daly, Dennis Hanley and Bridget Ryan; possibly two couples? His reference was a William Handy but James Bowles acted as reference for the other three so perhaps William Handy was a previous immigrant from Tipperary to Australia who knew the Bowles family. William is stated to be a Protestant so possibly the other three were Catholics. All were 19 to 20 years of age. reference James Bowles (a shoemaker) of Kilboy m. Elizabeth 1.
