First of all I would like to acknowledge both Michael Purcell and Michael Brennan without whose hard work and dedication to documenting Carlow's people, their history and their stories, my minor efforts would not have been possible.  Anyone researching any aspect of county Carlow would be well advised to participate in the IRL-Carlow List easily one of the best, most informative and helpful lists on the Net and also to consult Michael Brennan's Carlow County IGP web site.

Bowles in county Carlow have been found in the three areas circled on the map.

Carlow Town

The Bowles of Ballickmoyler, co. Laois had several close connections to Carlow town which was the nearest market town for them.  Joseph Bowles of Ballickmoyler had a shoe maker's shop there for several years before emigrating to Canada.

There also seems to have been some connections between other Bowles in Carlow town and the Bowles of Wexford.

Ballintrane (near Templepeter on the map)

John Boles of the Boles of Cork settled at Ballintrane from about 1690 until about 1710 when he moved to land he had acquired in Magorban, co. Tipperary where he built Woodhouse.  While in Carlow he was active in the Friends (Quakers) community.  John Boles son George was disinherited for remaining in the Protestant faith and nothing more is known of him.  He may have been the origin of my Bowles in Ballickmoyler line.

Dunleckney

The Bowles of Ballickmoyler had several connections with Dunleckney where we have found several Bowles references.  John Bowles of Ballickmoyler lived here from about 1808 before taking his family to Canada in 1818.  A William Bowles died here in 1816 but I haven't figured out for sure which William that was or found out what he was doing there yet, but I'm working on it.
