James and Ellen Bowles came from Ireland in 1854 and settled first in Montreal (about 1854 to 1858), then moved on to Perth, Drummond twp., Lanark co. (about 1859 to 1875) and then finally to Toronto.  See The Bowles of Perth for more on this family.  Three of their children married in Toronto:

Richard Pinch Bowles, wife Annie and children Vera (Addie?) and George lived in Toronto while he was President and Chancellor of Victoria University (1913 to the 1930’s).  See The George Bowles Family of Peel county for more on his ancestry.  Another earlier connection to Peel county was:

Edward and Susan Bowles emigrated from England to Canada in 1882 with their son Richard and his family and settled in Toronto.  Their son William joined them in 1884 and soon married and raised a family.  Son Edward followed with his wife Hannah and 7 children in 1887 and also settled in Toronto where another child was born in 1888.  Son Thomas and wife Fanny were probably the last members of the family to arrive in 1890, also settling in Toronto and raising a large family.  Richard's son Ernest Richard Bowles became a noted musician, choir master and composer for the United Church of Canada.

Elizabeth Bowles Brenchley, third daughter of Charles Brenchley, Esq. of Camberwell, England (his wife would have been a Bowles) married William Gamble (b. John, Richard and James Boles lived together at the corner of Sumach and Oak Streets in 1846. (Toronto City Directory 1846-47).  John Bowles, labourer, lived at the same corner in 1857 while John Bowles, carter, lived on Centre Street. (1857 Directory of Ontario)  The 1866 Mitchell's General Directory for the City of Toronto lists John Bowles, carter living at 111 Oak Street; Richard Bowles, gardener, living at 68 River and Samuel Bowles, clerk, living at 47 Sumach.  John, Richard, James and Samuel would all be members of the same Bowles family but their relationship is not yet known.
