The Bowles of Canada and their
Roots in Ireland and England Bowles in Nova Scotia |
The Bowles family was in Nova Scotia as early as the 1700's with several
more Bowles and Boles families arriving from England and Ireland in the
1800's.
Nova Scotia Counties Where Bowles/Boles Families Settled: (see the map below)
There is also one reference in each of Digby and Shelburne townships The New England Bolles in Nova Scotia Bowles mentioned in Ship Arrivals There was also a significant number of Bowles of Black (African) origin who settled primarily in Cumberland county near Amherst. I know very little about their background other than to assume the families originated in the U.S. and escaped slavery by coming to Canada in the early 1800's. I have included a page based on census information and some forum postings in The Bowles of Cumberland county and would welcome any additional information or links to other sites with further background. Here is an interesting account of the Black Loyalists of 1783-85 which mentions a Bowles in the Book of Negros transported from New York to Nova Scotia.
