Feb. 1, 1848 Zion Church, Montreal, Quebec From Montreal – 350 Years in Vignettes by Edgar Andrew Collard After a Friday evening service in January 1848, John Bowles the congregational minister in Chateauguay and some of his flock were driving home in a procession of sleighs. The roads were not good, so they changed to the ice of the Chateauguay River. With the Minister in his sleigh, leading the little procession, was a woman member of the congregation. Close to the shore the ice was firm but it grew thinner farther out in the river where the current was fast. The night was dark and the Minister drove a little too far from shore. The ice sank and splintered. The parishioner in the sleigh was thrown out but landed on firm ice. The Minister, with horse and sleigh, went down and was carried out of sight. Nothing was seen; nothing could be done. Next morning at dawn many men turned out with saws and axes. Horse and sleigh were found, but the sleigh was empty. The next day, Sunday, they found the Minister’s body downstream in open water, lying against a large boulder. 1845-1848.0.006 m of textual records (27 p.).

Series consists of register of baptisms, marriages and burials, 1845-1848, for the Congregational Church of Châteauguay, Quebec, which includes a number of entries for Châteauguay Basin. The register was kept by the Reverend John Bowles (d. 1855), who received his theological education at the Congregational College in Toronto. The Congregational Church at Châteauguay called him to be its pastor, 6 May 1845, and he was ordained to that ministry, at Châteauguay, 4 September 1845, by the agent of the Colonial Missionary Society, the Reverend Henry Wilkes (1805-1886), pastor of Zion Congregationalal Church, Montreal, together with the Reverend J.J. Carruthers. REFERENCE NUMBERS: NEW: None FORMER: MG29-C119 CONSULTATION/REPRODUCTION: Textual records Open ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: (File 1. Also available on microfilm, reel H-1807. Mar. 17, 1995 Montreal The following James may not belong in this family but this has yet to be proven or disproven. He is placed here only to show where he would fit in if he does belong with this family. John Bowles and Susan Heath did have a son, James, born in Ireland in 1832 and baptised in Montreal in 1833 as shown here but there are no further confirmed records for that James. The James Bowles who married Euphemia Cunningham has no records in Montreal prior to 1861 and reported many different dates of births on various records but the earliest seems to be 1835 in Ireland. So the first James may have suddenly died although there is no death record at the First Baptist Church in Montreal (and they kept meticulous records for the rest of the family) and then a second James of about the same age and who did not like to indicate his origins on any of his official records, arrived from Ireland. Alternatively, he may have had a falling out with this family between 1833 and 1861 resulting in his conversion from the Baptist Church to the Presbyterian Church. We may never know for sure. New note: James Bowles signed as a witness to Henry Bowles marriage in 1857. The above could be decided if that signature was compared to the James Bowles signature on one of the following birth registrations for one of James and Euphemia’s children or on their marriage registration from 1866. ....... 2 James303 BOWLES 1832 - 1899 b: November 12, 1832 Ireland bp.
