Historical Background

Why did so many Irish people come to Canada when they did?  What was their situation like in Ireland before that?

I Cry For My People by Martin McMahon gives an excellent account of Ireland's history, the political struggles, the Irish famine and the mass emigration to other lands.  Chapter 26 Emigration is particularly relevant to understand why so many Irish came to Canada.
