The Palatine Street in the Slieveardagh Hills of Tipperary

The Palatine Street is little more than a dirt track in Kilcooley Parish which runs for about 2 to 3 miles between the towns of Grange and The Commons (or Black Commons) and passes through the old townland of Bawnlea (in the photo).  Only two houses are seen along that stretch today.  The road was named for the Palatinate Settlement established in this area in the mid 1700's by the Baker family.

By the late 1700's or early 1800's the Palatines had largely spread out to other areas and the Baker family let the land to other settlers including the Bowles family.  George Bowles and his family lived at Bawnlea while John Bowles and his family lived at The Commons.  See The Bowles of Kilcooly

A farm and house in Bawnlea from the time that the Bowles lived there.  Possibly this was even their home.

The townland between Bawnlea and Blackcommon is Newpark.  In 1777, George Ryall of Newpark and Fethard married Ann Bowles of Killenaule.
