NOTES FROM BEDFORD CO., VA

Thomas R.(Rose?) Wharton:

1.) Left a pension declaration stating that at the time of the declaration in 1819 he believed himself to be78 years old. He enlisted in Bedford County in 1779 for 18 months. He marched to Charleston in the 2nd Virginia Regiment Continental Establishment. He was at the Siege of Charleston where he was taken prisoner by the British. He soon escaped and came home. He again enlisted and marched to Petersburg with the same regiment (he calls it artillery). He was at Charleston when Cornwallis surrendered. He served 3 years and was discharged at Charleston. He was in the Battle of Eutaw Springs. He is a farmer by trade with only a wife of 60 years. His personal property is listed as such: 1 sow & 4 shoats; 1 feather bed; 2 iron pots& oven; 1 hoe & axe and 4 split bottom chairs.

2.) He left no will.

3.) We have no marriage bond for him

4.) There are no deeds showing he purchased or sold land.

5.) The court order books show that he applied for his pension and the proof of need for assistance.  He also makes a declaration in regard to the assessed value of his property.

 

1779-1887 Index to Deeds Prince William Co., VA indicates:

Thomas W. (Wharton?) Rose et al to John N. Folson, Bk. 32, pg. 350, Deed. (Could this be Thomas Wharton Rose?)   [Folson should probably be Foulden or Folden)

 

Thomas Rose, Sr.:

1.) No pension declaration.

2.) No marriage bond.

3.) No deeds showing he purchased or sold land.

4.) No will

5.) Court order books show that he worked under William Ewing (surveyor) in the 1780s. In 1815 he is shown as the heir of Thomas Rose Jr. They also show that in 1816 he was exonerated from erroneously assessed delinquent taxes. They also show an affidavit filed in regard to his application for a pension. His heirs Jane and Uriah are also proven, Jane in 1825 and Uriah in 1826.

Affidavit - Uriah Rose, Bedford Co., VA; Affidavit - Samuel Colter, 1827.

Uriah Rose being sworn according to law doth say that he has never received any land bounty from the State of Virginia nor the United States on account of services rendered by Thomas Rose his ancestor deceased in the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment during the Revolution or any war nor has any others claiming as heirs to the said Thomas Rose his ancestor deceased to his knowledge or belief nor did the said Thomas Rose ever receive any land bounty from the State of Virginia nor the United States on account of his services as aforesaid nor did the said Thomas Rose his ancestor deceased ever sell, assign or in any manner whatsoever transfer his claim to any person or persons to his knowledge or belief nor has this deponent ever transferred his claims to any persons in any way whatsoever and further saith not---signature:   Uriah Rose
 

The foregoing affidavit was this day sworn to before me one of the Commonwealth Justices of the Peace for the County of Bedford. Given under my hand this 11th day of November 1826.   Robert Campbell

 

Samuel Colter aged 72 years being sworn according to law doth say that he enlisted Thomas Rose in the spring of 1781 for the term of during the war at the town of New London in the State of Virginia and that the said Rose enlisted into Captain Nathan Reeds Company, 10th Regiment of the Virginia line on Continental Establishment.  Deponent further sayeth that said Rose was transferred in the month of September of the aforesaid year to Captain Bookers Company, 2nd Regiment of the Virginia Continental Line commanded by Colonel Heath--and that said Rose was honorably discharged in the year 1783 at Richmond by Colonel (undecipherable) Davis and further sayeth not--- signature: Saml. Colter
 

Subscribed and sworn to before me one of the Commonwealth Justices of the Peace for said county and state given under my hand this 25 day of November 1826.  Charles Whitely (last name undecipherable)

 

The following affidavit was filed, ordered to be certified.  Bedford County, August 17th, 1829.  This day James Foulden of lawful age came before me John H. Otey and made oath that he recollects that some time in the Revolutionary War (undecipherable), so well recollect the year  that Thomas Rose was enlisted in the regular army he thinks for 18 months what company or what regiment he don’t recollect, he thinks he was enlisted under some case that made it necessary for some number (undecipherable) to enlist one man, he thinks his father John Ewing, Capt.--(undecipherable) Campbell (undecipherable) Beard was the man or at least a part enlisted him, he also states that he knows that Thomas Rose did go into the service of the United States and that has every reason to believe he served his time he enlisted for.  This (undecipherable) further don’t recollect.
