Miles H. Pendergrass

Miles H. Pendergrass was born about 1811 in South Carolina. According to another researcher (whose name I long ago lost but a copy of whose work can be found in the Macon County Public Library's family file folders), Miles's middle name was Hezekiah. The same researcher states that Miles was the son of Hezekiah Pendergrass, who was born ca 1785, and Margaret, whose maiden name may have been Miles. I have not yet verified either the middle name of Miles nor whom his parents were.

Miles was married on 18 November 1832 in Macon Co., NC to Mary Lowry, thought to be a daughter of John Lowry, who died about 1841, probably in Macon Co., NC. Miles and Mary were not enumerated on the 1840 Federal Census, Macon Co., NC or, at least, I did not find them there. Three other Pendergrass families were enumerated: John Pendergrass on p. 143, Jesse Pendergrass on p. 154, and Wm. Pendergrass on p. 145.

Some recent discoveries about Miles came while looking through the older deed books of Macon Co., NC. On 3 February 1842, Miles witnessed a deed between John Huggins and Wm. G. Wells. This deed was also witnessed by Frace Nichols (probably Francis Nichols). On 20 September 1843, Miles witnessed a deed between Eli Waldroup and Francis Nickes (Francis Nichols). The other witnesses were Wm. G. Watts and W. E. Carter. In both cases, Miles name was given as Miles H. Pendergrass and he made an x mark when signing. I have not yet found a record of Miles buying or selling land in Macon County, but it is clear from his will that he did own land in Macon County.

Miles and family were enumerated on the 1850, 1860 and 1870 Federal Censuses of Macon Co., NC. Mary was listed as head of household in the 1880 Federal Census, Macon Co., NC; enumerated with her was daughter Eliza Adelaide Pendergrass, her husband Joseph H. Anderson, and four of their children. Miles had died by 29 September 1873 when his last will and testament was proven in the Probate Court of Macon Co., NC. The eleven children of Miles and Mary were all named in the will. What I currently have on the estate of Miles H. Pendergrass can be found by clicking on the link near the top of the page under "Records".

I have only just begun to research this family in depth and will post more information as I come across it.
