Notes: John W. Martin was possibly the son of either Shields and Cinthia [MNU] Martin or Edmon and Sarah [MNU] Martin. Both families were enumerated in the 1850 federal census in Pickens District, South Carolina. More research is needed before a definitive fit can be made. John W. Martin seems to have disappeared after the 1860 federal census; wife, Martha, is listed as the head of household in both the 1870 and 1880 federal censuses, and as a widow in the 1880 federal census. Also in the latter census, she was enumerated two doors away from John Martin, Sr. of Ireland and his family. It is an overwhelming coincidence that the first record I have for John Martin, Sr. is of his marriage to Celia Carver in 1863, while John W. Martin seems to have disappeared around the same time.
