1860 Free Population Schedule
Rabun Co., GA

This census was enumerated by James Bleckley. His handwriting was, for the most part, remarkably clear and legible. The original of this census, which includes every schedule, is located in the Probate Judge's office in Clayton, Rabun Co., GA.

Be aware that the capital letters "L" and "S" (when at the beginning of a name) and the capital initial "L" were indistinguishable in the original. Although the capital initial "S" was written differently, some confusion still remains. In other words, a capital initial "L" may be mistinterpreted here as an "S". If you have questions about the initial(s) of your ancestor(s) in this transcription, please refer to the original census.

The following household numbers were not used: number 72 in 587 Dist. (Town of Clayton); number 257 (between Valley and Persimmon Districts); number 306 (between Persimmon and Tallulah).

The column on the left gives the District name and number (where given), listed in the order they were visited by the census taker. The column on the right gives the pages on which those Districts were enumerated. The numbers used here are not the original page numbers. Pages 536 and 562 were not used.

The page number and date of enumeration is given at the top of each table. Some families were divided over more than one page. An * in the dwelling and family columns means that that household was carried over from the previous page. Be sure to check adjoining pages for your family! Also, please be aware that in the original, the census taker did not always list the surname for family members when a family carried over onto a new page, but here, surnames are given on new pages for the sake of convenience.

Each column is numbered, except the far left column, which is used to show the line number. Each page had 40 lines. The remaining columns from left to right are:

  1. Dwelling-houses numbered in the order of visitation
  2. Families numbered in the order of visitation
  3. The Name of every Person whose usual place of abode on the first day of June, 1860 was in this family (column 3a: surname; column 3b: given name)
  4. Age
  5. Sex (gender)
  6. Color: White, black, or mulatto
  7. Profession, Occupation, or Trade of each Male Person over 15 years of age
  8. Value of Real Estate owned
  9. Value of Personal Estate owned
  10. Place of birth. Naming the State, Territory, or Country

  12. Attended school within the year
  13. Persons over 20 years of age who cannot read and write

Totals at the bottom of each page were not included in this transcription.

In column 10, the enumerator usually only gave the state of birth, which have been reduced in this transcription to their 2-letter postal code: MD=Maryland, PN=Pennsylvania, MA=Massachusetts, etc. Countries were reduced to a three-letter abbreviation: IRE=Ireland, etc.

In columns 11, 12 and 13, an "x" was used in this transcription instead of the enumerator's mark.

This census was transcribed from a census CD made by S-K Publications. Every effort has been made to insure that the transcription reflects a true and accurate copy of the original.
