Notes on Johann Jacob (I) Bonstein
Hessian Soldiers of Company B, Regiment von Knyphausen
Listed here is more information on Jacob & brother Paulus's service during the Revolution:

The Regiment von Knyphausen served in North America:
Long Island, NY, 1776
White Plains, NY, 1776
Fort Washington, NY, 1776
Trenton, NJ, 1776
Brandywine, PA, 1777
Germantown, PA, 1777
Garrisoned Philadelphia, PA, 1777-1778
Monmouth, NJ, 1778
Garrisoned New York, NY, 1778-1780
Prince Edward Island & Canada, 1780-1781
Garrisoned New York, 1781-1783

We know that Jacob and Paulus were together until Trenton Dec 26, 1776, after this our research stays with Jacob, except for minor information about Paulus. Both were captured, and sent to the jail in Lancaster, PA. Because of lack of jail space, prisoners were assigned to American farmers who were responsible for them.[ I have a copy of the Composition list of German and Waldeck prisoners of war, Paulus and Jacob are on it.] Paul was assigned to David Miller and Jacob to Richard Henry. The Bonstein men were listed on the Lancaster Exchange list & returned to the Knyphausen Reg. in 1778.
"On the 4th of September, 1779, the Regiments von Knyphausen and von Lossberg received orders to make ready to embark with all their baggage, and with such of their sick as could support a journey. Their destination was Quebec, though the men did not know it at the time"
There was two regiments they embarked on the 8th of September on six vessels. During the loading the two brothers were separated and boarded different ships. Jacob boarded the Trenton. Although, it has been written that Paulus boarded the Archer, I have not found that name as being one of the six ships used for transporting these troops. The fleet ran into a hurricane and most were recaptured, I believe one ship sank. The brothers were separated again. Paulus made it to Quebec, but Jacob was recaptured. He deserted and stayed, Paulus went home to Germany. It makes you wonder if Jacob ever visited Germany and his family or if they even exchanged correspondence.
