James Barnes was born probably in the year 1758 or 1759 in the State of Pennsylvania and enlisted from that state in the U.S. Army to fight for American Independence in the Revolutionary war. After the war he returned to his native state and got married and had two boys, David Barnes and Jonathan Barnes. His wife died and he then married Miss Susanna Baker. Their children: Ira Barnes, born August 12, 1793. Susan Barnes, born November 21, 1795. Weltha Barnes, probably born, 1797. Hiram Barnes, born in 1801. Elsie Barnes, probably born in 1804. Barnes, probably born in 1806. James Barnes bound his son Ira to a Mr. Sheppard Pierce to work for him until he was 21 yars old and was to receive at that time $100.00 and a horse. James Barnes moved his family (except Ira) to Livingston County, New York State, where he died. Mrs. Barnes, finding it was impossible to support her family, was compelled to withdraw her son Ira from the services of Mr. Pierce, to help her support the family. As Ira did not serve all his time out Mr. Pierce refused to give him any pay for his former services. Mrs. Barnes lived at or near Avon Springs, N.Y., where her oldest daughter Susan married Richard Wadsworth, June (continued to page - 2 -) |
