He probably went to Cambria County, Pennsylvania as his brothers, Robert and Russell had settled in that county. Here he met Martha Stevens, they were married the 25th of May, 1867. Martha was born the 2nd of January, 1850 in Cambria County the daughter of William and Elizabeth Wearne Stevens.

Family lore states Francis worked in the Cambria County mines and was a local minister. By 1871 he was with the Evangelical church within the Pittsburgh Conference. By 1879 he was with the Ohio Conference.
