The picture below shows the former Turton Workhouse c.1910. Cottages dating from around 1700 were converted for use as a workhouse in 1780. Enlargements in 1801 and 1825 enabled the workhouse poor to be employed on handloom weaving. When the Fishpool Workhouse was built in Farnworth in 1861, the now redundant Turton Workhouse was sold to Mr. Kay of Turton Tower, then to the Rothwell family of Sharples Hall (see webpage sharpleshall.htm) who opened it as a pub known as the De Rothwell Arms. It reverted to cottages in 1910, and was demolished in 1945.
Cox Green Road, close to the quarry, is today just open farmland where the workhouse once stood. The map below is dated 1850.
