I love this picture which shows a delightful family group, probably taken between 1900-1914. The bottom of this postcard reads 'Entrance to Jumbles, Gamekeepers Cottage' This was formerly the old Bradshaw Corn Mill, built ca.1820. With the advent of the trams, the Jumbles became a popular venue for Sunday walkers. Contact List quoting ref: 2D.

The man in the foreground is possibly Richard Tomkinson, who lived in the Deane area. The Photo dated June 1911 at the Coronation celebrations for King George V.

Picture on left shows four workmen in Bark St, Bolton. Gentleman on right believed to be John 'Jehu' Hughson born 1868, father of George Hughson (see above photo).

The Loan Office at 78 Bark St would date this photo as early 20th century. Can anyone name the other workmen in the photo?

John 'Jehu' HUGHSON, seated on a bench next to his wife Alice Ann (WHITTLE). Perched on the arm of the bench is Florence Elizabeth May (GARDNER) and standing behind is her husband, Jehu's son, George b1892. Other two people on the far left are unknown.

Emily born Chester 23.3.1890. Her birth certificate shows her name as BASNETT. On the 1901 census she is named as Emily Lewis and is called Russell Lewis’ daughter. The family of three female children in 1901 lived at 21, Back Chorley Street, Bolton, Russell's occupation bootmaker. EMILY married WILLIAM GILLER, a cotton spinner at Mawdsley St Chapel, Bolton on 1.1.1914, when she was 23 and he 21, and they had three children; JOYCE WILFRED and JOHN.  Please contact List if you have any connection with this family, quoting Ref: 2Y.

The is an early photo of Emily Giller, extreme left, probably before she married in what may be Roocrofts factory.  No idea who the others are.

This is the sign outside the Doffcocker Inn, showing a man "doffing his cockers", which is thought to have given the area its name. This is the present inn, which replaced a much older one in 1900. It is on the site of the old toll gate on Chorley Old Road, and is known as a Calendar Pub.
