This name was taken from the old Anglo-Saxon " maed" , which meant "mowed or cut down - a meadow.
The Meades of Ireland trace the name to the old Irish "Meagh " . The family was seated in the county of Cork Ireland . for many centuries, At Meadesdtown . in that county , there was formerly a great castle built by the Meades.
The first of the family in America was Andrew Meade of County Kery , Ireland . He landed in New York where he met and married Mary Latham of Flushing , Long Island ,. Five years after he removed to Virginia and settled in Nansemond county. He left two children ,a son and a Daughter , David the son Married Susaanna Everard of North Carolina. Richard Meade , the son of Edward , the immigrant ,was a aid to General Washington during the Revolution. He was with the Commander in Chief in all the important battles , and it is recorded that the great general held him in high esteem and warmest affection.. At the close of the War ,on taking leave of his soldiers , He said to Col. Meade :" Friend Dick , you must go on a Virginia Plantation. You will make a good an honest foreman of the grand jury of your county." This advise was followed and the prediction verified.

Notes for George Mead:
My Grandfather was about 5' 9" and around 160 lbs dark wavy hair almost black with little or no schooling , He worked in the mines of Eastern Kentucky around the Paintsville area and the Ashland , Kentucky, City directory for 1924 listed him living on Winchester Ave. Extd. This employment as working for the Ashland By - Products ( Coke Ovens ) in Ashland .He was lay off when he near retirement age and never called back. this was done to a lot of people at that time . He then worked as a House Painter and Carpenter , He died in 1943 at 3025 Winchester Ave. in Ashland , Ky. in bed at home. He also lived for a while in Lawrence county , KY on the farm of my father Milton B. Johns 1932 to late 1939 . He worked hard all his life and a was a hard but fair man . ( Note there was a daughter who died when she was 13 years old , I do not have her name , She is buried near her Mother and Father in the Ashland Cemetery ( 1518 Belmont Ashland Ave. , Ashland , Kentucky . again I know the area but can not fine the grave , due to the records was lost or no body knows how to read the one they have .

Alice was Married March 07 , 1907 to George Mead , her age at that time was listed as 19 , his at 23 . Marriage records at Catlettsburg , Boyd co.Ky. Her death certificate shows her birth day as 30 Sept. 1893 in Lawrence Co. Ky. also shows Adam Stacy of Johnson Co. and her Mother was Jane Price also of Johnson Co. , Ky. Note: Social security in Ashland , Ky. was a help to fine my Great Grandparents Names at the time of her death she had living a sister Sarah Stacy and a brother George Stacy of Paintsville and Sarah was living in Ashland at 3025 Winchester Ave. , Ashland , KY Her birth certificate 24 Sept. 1889 .Her place of rest is in the Ashland Cemetery ( 1518 Belmont Ashland ) I wanted to buy a head stone for their Graves ,But was only able to fine the area were they are resting . My Grandmother worked hard all her life and gave her children and Grandchildren a lot of love . I love her very Much George M. Johns their Grandson.

Stella Marie Meade b. 01 Jan. 1910 Married Miltion Burns Johns Dec. 23 , 1926 Louisa , Lawrence county , Kentucky schooling 1 thru 12 grade Ashland School system , Ashland Business college for Bookkeeping and Data Processing two year course in 1945 to 1946. Worked in Claytion and lambert Ammunition Plant during world war ll in Ashland, Kentucky Went to work for Lazzrus department store in their data processing department . 1947 was put in charge of their key punch operators , later that year she was in charge of training and supervision and in 1948 was in charge of their department ,1950 she was in charge of setting up training programs for all of Lazzrus stores and was use as trouble shooting their stores and other company , even after she died in 1966 , We received calls from stores in many different states

I will try and tell a little about my father Milton Burns Johns , Dad was born in 1900 in Louisa ,Lawrence county Kentucky his Mother died when he was five years old .as a young man he was 5' 8'' tall and around 135 pounds ,Had Blue eyes and Brown hair, I believe that his weight was never over 160 lb. , He worked in the coal mines in Eastern Ky. as a young man , He was a Electrician Helper ( above Ground )He loved to hunt and fish and he made it very clear to me that if you shoot something it was to put food on the table for your family or friend Very good marksman and won several shooting contests , as was his brother Johnny B. Johns in fact most of the Johns I have come in contact with could handle a rifle better than most .He went to work for ARMCO Steel company in 1920 and retired there at the age of 65 from the Steam and Power Dept. (He love the people he worked with and the company he worked for.) But the thing that he loved most was his Grandchildren and being with them , When he would come to visit, the children in the neighborhood would bring their toys to fix or want him to come out to play with them ,He love it and he would say " Just look at them , I wish that they could be this happy forever " He was over 65 and still enjoyed the sounds that only children can make. I loved him very much , His Son george M. Johns

Mrs J.C. Johns Dead
Mrs James C. Johns died at her home near Louisa last Saturday and was buiried the following day in the Johns Burying grounds. Her Disease was consumption . She was 36 years of age and leaves a child of five years. Mrs Johns was the adopted daughter of Mrs L.M. ( unable to read , It look like Atkins) and was a good woman. The funeral was conducted by Rev. N. G. Grizzle of S.M.E. Chuch.

He married Dorothy Mildred Stewart August 08, 1950 in Ashland , Boyd County , Ky.(First Methodist Church By Reverend King ), daughter of Greenville Stewart and Nora Mckinney.

Dear George,  In your msg of 26 Sept '97 you gave me enough info to be able
to help in extending your ancestry back several generations.  The Thomas
Johns Jr. who you stated was the patriarch of the Johns family of Big Sandy
Valley, eastern KY, m. Nancy Layne Amherst Co, VA 1807.  The Deputy Clerk of
Amherst Co. has advised me that this marriage is recorded on page 201 of the
Amherst Marriage records.  This record also states that the father of Thomas
Johns Jr. is Thomas Johns Sr. of Amherst , VA.  Thomas Sr. m. Nancy Mehone 06
April 1779 Amherst.  The father of Thomas Sr. was Robert Johns Sr. of Amherst
b. abt 1720 King William, VA, d. before 01 March 1779 Amherst, m. Mary Unk?,
believed to be a Monacan Indian. [not documented, under study]  The first
positive record of Robert Sr. of Amherst is found in the will of Alexander
Trent II, which was recorded in Cumberland Co, VA 1750.  This was prior to
the formation of Amherst Co.  In the Trent will Robert Sr. appeared as an
overseer or manager of one of Trent's plantations.  Thomas Johns Sr. of
Cumberland appeared in a like position on another Trent plantation.  William
Johns also appeared as an adjascent land owner who had just sold cattle to
Trent.  It is believed that Robert Sr. of Amherst and Thomas Sr. of
Cumberland are brothers and are sons of William.  This situation is currently
under study for documentation.

When I get caught up on my pedigree, I will send you a copy.  I have
additional info on other children of Robert Sr of Amherst.  I am a descendant
of Thomas Sr. of Cumberland.  We now have a Johns Family History organization
doing research on all branches of the Johns surname that we have been able to
locate.  Our National Coordinator is Cliff Johns of Simpsonville, SC.  His

out for some of the work that has already been done.  I am in charge of
research in VA.  Would you like to join us and be responsible for KY?  We

it would be wise to put your pedigree into a genealogy program, such as FTM
or PAF, I'm sure there are many others just as good, but get one that allows
