This is one of the three sons that were, by tradition, born into the family of John Bodine and Nancy A. Gunnels but which are not otherwise known to have existed. This tradition is known in two branches of the family and has been told by members from both branches. A version of the story is that the early families of San Augustine County, Texas had gathered together for some reason and that during this outing some of the boys went out riding. The horse James rode fell back on him and killed him.
