His birth year would match up with the fact that he was ten years old at the time of the 1860 Mercer County, New Jersey Census (roll 698, p. 58). In the Hunterdon County Democrat of July 5, 1881, his name is listed as Joseph S. Bodine. It says he died on June 30, 1881 at Orange, New Jersey in the 32nd year of his age. It also says he was the brother of Mr. J. P. Bodine "of this place."
He is listed as a "merchant tailor" in the 1880 Census of Orange, Essex Co., NJ. He is in the house of his father-in-law, Gottlieb Bodmer.
